TABERNACLE, N.J. – This time, Maddie Morgenthaler listed to her father’s advice.
Morgenthaler took a feed with less than two minutes to play and – instead of passing the ball attacked the net and scored the game-winner to give SEPA (PA) a 5-4 win today Lanco Elite Blue in the 2015 championship game of the Girls Summer Slam at Seneca High.
“The whole season, my dad was telling me that I should take a shot, and I wasn’t,” said Morgenthaler, a 2015 midfielder at Bishop Shanahan (PA). “But this tournament, I had four goals before this (championship) game.
“Someone set a pick, and I was wide open. I decided to shoot the ball into the bottom right corner, and it would go win. It is the best feeling in the world when you score a game-winner.”
SEPA was one of eight age class champions at the Summer Slam, which attracted 40 college coaches.
Morgenthal’s heroics came after back-to-back goals by Mairead Janzer (Haverford High, Lafayette commit).
“She’s probably our MVP of the whole season,” said Morgenthaler. “She’s always the best player on the team. We really needed her to step up to help us win today.”
Shannon Callaghan (Downingtown East) scored the other SEPA second-half goal. Lanco Elite, which led, 2-1, at halftime, got second-half goals by Olivia Stahl and Jovonna Jewell (two goals).
SEPA also got solid goaltending from Kaitlyn France (Sun Valley) and Rachel Coblentz (Downingtown East).
“At halftime, coach Deb (Foster) wasn’t happy,” said Morgenthaler. “To be honest, we all weren’t happy, because we were down by one. That was motivation for us to come back. I wasn’t going to let it go into overtime.”
Lanco Elite took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jewell (Warwick), but Jess Lyons tied it before Renee Chivett put Lanco Elite back on top.
“It’s huge for them,” said Foster, whose team routed Lanco Elite White, 14-2, in the semifinals. “This is their last tournament together. These girls will play for their high school team one more year before graduating. This is one of their last memories together.”
