DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. – Edge Lacrosse scored six of the last seven goals of the second half to claim a 10-7 victory today over Mesa Fresh Fever in the 2017 championship game of the Philly Summer Invitational at United Sports.
Riley Curtis (Hill Academy, Denver commit), Mac Updike and Jaden Walcot each had two goals and goalie Warren McNeil posted seven second-half for Edge, which trailed 6-4 early in the second half.
“It’s great to drive all the way down here and represent Canada and prove we are good lacrosse players,” said McNeil, who attends Birchmount Park CI in Toronto. “The long trip just makes winning it all the more worth it. It’s just a great time, and a great bunch of kids. It’s fun to be here.”
McNeil said the defense adjusted to mesa Fresh’s weapons in the second half. Mesa Fresh also hurt itself with some penalties and the Edge attack capitalized.
“I didn’t really hear the halftime speech because I was getting warmed up, but in the second half we realized who their key players were and who was fast and how to shut them down a little bit better,” he said. “We capitalized on that and the defense woke up and played great.”
Also for Edge, Jack Kelly, Justin Inacio, Keaton Thomson and Mackenzie Iacocca notched goals.
For Mesa, Conner Mosebrook scored twice while Denny Nealon, Ryan Brown, Joel Trucksess, Billy Coyle, Westy McLaughlin each had one goal. Mesa Fresh advanced to the finals with an 8-2 win over 3d New England while Edge edged Building Blocks (NJ), 10-9, in the semis.
“A lot of us have been playing together for four or five years,” said McNeil. “Some joined this year, but we all play together in (box) club lacrosse back in Canada. It’s a great group of guys.”
