GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Sarah Phillips had three goals and an assist as Manhasset stunned Garden City, 14-8, Wednesday at Adelphi University to claim the Nassau County Class B girls’ lacrosse championship, snapping the Trojans’ eight-year hold on the title.
Manhasset (15-3) advances to the Long Island championship game Sunday vs. today’s Sayville-Eastport-South Manor winner at Adelphi. Garden City (17-2), ranked No. 5 by TopLaxRecruits.com, had won the last seven state championships.
“My kids played great,” said Manhasset head coach Danielle Gallagher. “We shot a lot smarter than we did the first time we played them (a 10-9 OT win by Garden City).
“We don’t look at one person to do anything big we have everyone contribute and everyone contributed today. This feels great and these kids deserve it they worked hard all season. They showed up tonight and they played their hearts out. Garden City is a great team but my kids just set the tone tonight.”
Garden City scored the first goal of the game, but Manhasset answered with a 5-0 run to seize the momentum. Manhasset then went on a 3-0 run early in the second half to make it 11-5.
Kellen D’Alleva scored two goals and three assists for the Indians, while Natalie Stefan scored two goals and one assist and Lindsey Ronbeck tallied two goals for Manhasset.
“This is the best feeling,” said Phillips. “This is one of the biggest lacrosse games I’ve played in, in my life. We brought out a new defense and I think that really shut them down. I’m so excited to go forward and this win is only going to pump us up even more.
“The sky is the limit for us.”
Tara DeAngelo scored three goals and Krista Dampman tallied two goals and three assists for Garden City.
“You can’t take anything away from Manhasset; they played a great game,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman. “They capitalized when they got the ball. We had our opportunities, but we just didn’t finish.”
