From Press Release
Upper River Lax is offering a new kind of summer program in the Philadelphia area – a month-long development camp with twice-daily practices, residential options for players from across the country, skill and position development, as well as tournament play and recruiting exposure and advice. Upper River Sports combines the best of skills camps and club teams, along with the intensive high-level development model from other sports, and mixes that with the fun and friendship of a traditional summer camp.
“We are incredibly excited about bringing the development camp model to lacrosse here in Philadelphia,” said Upper River Sports founder J. D. Bridges, who has run development camps in rowing over the past decade that have won multiple national championships and helped to send dozens of athletes on to top Division I programs. “This kind of experience is a proven way to become a significantly better player while having fun and growing and developing as a person as well.”
For Summer 2015, up to 25 boys from the Class of 2019 will be accepted. Camp will run from June 16 – July 20 and includes three tournaments in the region. Out-of-town athletes will be housed at Villanova University; players will practice on turf and grass fields on the Main Line outside of Philadelphia.
The head coach for this summer will be Brian Scheetz, a three-time All-American and the leading scorer in the history of lacrosse at Mercyhurst University. Scheetz has been coaching at the collegiate level for the past two years and has coached with SweetLax as well as starting an overnight skills camp in his hometown in upstate New York.
“I am incredibly excited to be a part of a game-changing concept like Upper River Lacrosse,” said Scheetz. “This will be a great opportunity for athletes looking to improve all aspects of their game and get set on a track for success in their high school careers. We’ll focus on individual instruction and fundamentals as well as team concepts. It’s going to be a fantastic summer for the kids who come out and grow as players and as a team with us.”
“Brian has a unique combination of passion, playing skill, coaching experience, and seriousness about both the game and coaching young people,” added Bridges. “The kids who play with UR this summer are going to be lucky. He’s the whole package as a coach for guys that age: experienced and patient but also energetic, and just with a huge lacrosse IQ he’ll be able to share with kids.”
Upper River Lax is also dedicated to coaching the whole player – and the whole team. Goalie instructors will be in several times throughout the summer, as well as professional and Division I defensive players and face-off experts. Each week will feature numerous additional speakers and instructors on topics like basic fitness for young athletes, nutrition, and mental toughness.
Parents can also rest easy knowing the summer is fully-inclusive: every player plays in every tournament and all travel is arranged and taken care of by the program. “Our goal is to make life easy on families by giving their kids the best experience possible while taking care of all of the logistics of summer lacrosse,” said Scheetz. “Local campers who don’t live in the dorms at Villanova are still able to come back to campus between practices and have lunch, for instance. We know summer can be a headache for parents – and it shouldn’t be. UR is changing that.”
Upper River Sports is committed to the development camp model for all its sport. “Bottom line: we’re about developing better lacrosse players, focusing on the process of getting better instead of solely winning games, and giving each kid the best experience possible. But we happen to know that by doing those things you always get some great outcomes,” Bridges said.
Scheetz added: “This is the place to come if you want to get ready for the high school level, and make an impression on college coaches in the future. No other program can do for you what we can.”
