FEASTERVILLE, Pa – Team 91 (N.Y.) is making a name for itself in box lacrosse.
The Long Island-based club has won numerous box titles – including a sweep of the USBoxLA Northeast Regionals – and today it claimed the A Division (HS freshman/sophomore) title at the Philadelphia Indoor Lacrosse Championships (by NXT Events) at the Sportsplex in suburban Philly.
Team 91 wins A Division title at PILC
Mike Gomez (Half Hollow Hills East, 2018 Johns Hopkins commit) and Taylor Strough (Cold Spring Harbor, 2017) each scored three goals and Noah Cohen (Hewlett) made 10 saves as Team 91 toppled the Junior Wings, 8-3, for the crown.
Team 91 bolted to a 3-0 halftime lead and was ahead 6-1 before the Wings pulled within, 6-3, with 7:10 to play on goals by Eric Sherman (Cherry Hill East, NJ) and Liam Baker (Lenape). But Gomez and Strough closed out the scoring with two late goals.
“The coaches know exactly what they are doing,” said Gomez. “We practice hard, the coaches have a great knowledge of the game and it’s everyone coming together and buying into what we do.”
“Our teammates work together,” added Strough. “We possessed when we needed to and we finished shots when it was necessary. That was the result; it was a big win.”
Timmy Ley (Massapequa, 2018) and Jordan Ginder (Poly Prep, 2018) each added one goal for Team 91. Drew Bregman (Lenape) also scored for the Jr. Wings and
Team 91 advanced to the finals with a hard-fought 7-6 overtime win over Building Blocks (N.J.). Gomez had the game-winner in that one. The Jr. Wings downed NXT 2018, 6-2, in the other semifinal.
The Jr. Wings were collection of players from South Jersey and several from the Philly area, as well as Canadian import Scott Mason, a 2016 goalie from Brock in Ontario who had 13 first-half saves. Second-half goalie Gib Versfeld (Hun School, 2017) added five saves.
“The AILA (American Indoor Lacrosse Association) helped us put together this team, and most of the guys are from South Jersey with some from Pennsylvania,” said Jr. Wings co-coach Jim Spicer, an assistant at Seneca (NJ). “They (Team 91) are a good team!
“I think we played the same game we played all day, but they killed us on groundballs and they were physical. Their pick series was awesome; they picked and slipped and went through seams.
“Our guys were shocked by that; they really hadn’t seen that. They were two or three steps ahead of us. They deserve all the credit, but we are proud of our guys.”
