OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Phil Poquie scored early into overtime to give The Haverford School (PA) a thrilling 9-8 victory today at McDonogh School (MD) in a classic Philly-Baltimore opener featuring top-ranked teams.

The Fords tied the game with 1:24 to play when junior Dox Aitken (three goals, two assists) fed an open Grant Ament in the crease after being double teamed.
Haverford’s Jake Hervada (Delaware) then won the face-off to open the extra frame and Poquie – a Virginia commit – dodged and beat Jacob Stover for the victory.
Haverford School is ranked No. 3 in the Epoch Lacrosse North America Rankings; McDonogh is No. 6.
“It went back and forth,” said Poquie. “I had a few mishaps in the beginning of the game and missed a few groundballs and I was upset with myself.
“Our team was resilient and we fought back and we got the opportunity in overtime.”
Aitken was brilliant for the Fords and 2016 attackman Forry Smith (Johns Hopkins) added two goals while Brandon Shima (Michigan) and Keyveat Postell each had one. Neither team led by more than one goal at any time.
Hervada along with fellow seniors Colin Bosak (Navy) and Brian Casey (Ursinus) helped the Fords dominate at the face-off X.
Senior goalie Stover (Loyola) was brilliant for McDonogh with 14 saves. Seniors Robert Clark (Penn State) and Blake Gray (Gettysburg) and 2016 Barrett Sutley (Penn State) each scored twice for the Eagles.
“For a game on March 10 both teams played well,” said Haverford coach John Nostrant. “It was a fun game. We’re a senior-laden team and some seniors made big plays. They went up and we answered and they did the same. The Game could have gone either way.
“I love out schedule; we have to get up for every game,” added Nostrant, whose Fords host another MIAA power, St. Paul’s School, on Friday.
McDonogh coach Andy Hilgartner said his team showed many positives.
“For a March 10th game it was quite a battle,” he said. “We had a great effort all the way around. We kept battling and that’s a great sign for our team and the season to come.
“It was two great teams going toe to toe; what more can you ask for in the early season? It’s a great preparation for us for the league and other out-of-state games.”
Hilgartner praised Stover for his standout performance and noted that the offense had its moments.
“We were opportunistic offensively and we converted some fast break goals,” he said. “Stover was phenomenal. He’s been great in practice so what he did today doesn’t surprise me at all.
“We love playing Haverford early in the year because we know we’re going to get a great run. We have some great teams in the MIAA, but Haverford is as good as anyone out there.”
