Caroline Wiseman scored the game-winner with 7:25 to play to give host St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (VA) a tough 11-10 win over Holy Cross (MD) in a non-league girls’ lacrosse opener Wednesday.

Sophomore Zoe Belodeau (Penn) led the Saints – ranked 6th in the STEPS Lacrosse Girls’ Rankings – with two goals and two assists and two key draw controls down the stretch. Senior Ellie Majure (Duke) added two goals and an assist while junior Eloise Carson (Dartmouth) was a force as the Saints overcame a two-goal deficit.

St. Stephen’s is playing its 40th season under legendary coach Kathy Jenkins, whose team was missing five starters due to injuries. Jenkins’ Saints head to California to play six games – including an incredible three in own day on Saturday at La Costa Canyon, north of San Diego.

The three-game marathon begins at 11:30 a.m. when the Saints face PA’s Episcopal Academy (1-0). At 2:30 SSSA meets La Costa Canyon (3-0) and then nearby rival Torrey Pines (3-0) at 5:30 p.m.

Normally, the Saints have large numbers, although few teams have ever played three times in one day. But Jenkins not only had five starters out Wednesday, but many others are injured and her numbers for varsity and JV have dwindled to just 30. She estimated that she has been without as many as 10 players due to injury in the past week.

“We had to bring up five 8th graders for the game Wednesday,” she said. “It’s been a little bit of a nightmare. Numbers have been a problem. First we had the snow and now all the girls getting hurt. I never had a year like this.”

After the three games Saturday, the Saints go north to San Francisco to play Carondelet on Tuesday, St. Ignatius Prep on Wednesday and Marin Catholic next Thursday.

“Hopefully, California will prepare us,” Jenkins said. “Right now we want to get everyone healthy and back on track. We have some nice young players and I think they will surprise some people.

“It’s hard when people are not 100 percent. We want to build that chemistry on the trip. Hopefully it will be good to be together.”

Episcopal Academy (PA) 7, Hill Academy (Ontario) 6, OT

Julia Hondros scored the game-winner in overtime as host Episcopal Academy opened its season with a win over Hill Academy (2-1).

Hondros led a balanced attack with two goals and an assist while Corinne Zanolli added two goals. Jane Crager contributed a goal, an assist and five draw controls as well as a groundball and a caused turnover and goalie Sydney Gagnon had five saves and two interceptions.

St. Paul’s (MD) 10, Coppell (TX) 3

Despite a brilliant 21-save effort by Jeremy Lim, the Crusaders (No. 11 inthe Epoch Lacrosse Rankings) improved to 2-1 with the win at Coppell (4-2).

Eli Ayer won 13 of 18 face-offs for St. Paul’s and AJ Barretto posted eight saves. Tyler Rockhill led a balanced attack with two goals and Connor Flaig added a goal and an assist.

Arapahoe (CO) 16, Grandview (CO) 9

Brian Wilson collected four goals and two assists and Austin Shindoll added four goals and an assist for the Warriors (3-0).HS Roundup
