MINEOLA, N.Y. – Brogan Mahon tallied five goals and jack Tigh scored the game-winner midway through the final period to help host Chaminade edge St. Anthony’s, 11-10, today in Round 1 of their epic CHSAA rivalry.
The tow-time defending champion Flyers, ninth in the Epoch Lacrosse North American Rankings, improved to 6-1 overall. The 17th-ranked Friars fell to 3-3.
“This was great,” said Mahon. “We always play with a little more heart in this game. When we see them on the field everyone gets a little extra edge.
“We always know that they are going to make their runs and we are going to make our runs. Last year I think we were up 5-2 and they came back and we went into overtime. So we knew this was going to be a close game all along, it was just about making our run at the right time.”
After an even first quarter, Chaminade used a 3-0 run to spark a 6-3 halftime lead. In the third quarter St. Anthony’s came out on their own 3-0 run tying the game at six at the 8:55 mark and three minutes later Christopher Buscemi scored a goal off a pass from Danny Jones giving St. Anthony’s back the lead.
At the 4:41 mark Will Renz tied it and 11 seconds later Mahon scored his fourth goal to give the Flyers an 8-7 lead. Michael Laviano scored his only goal of the game with 1:44 left in the third quarter to tie it again and going into the fourth quarter.
Chaminade fired first at the 10:23 mark going up 9-8 but two minutes later Brendan Homire tied it back up. One minute later Buscemi scored again, but 19 seconds laterl Mahon scored off a pass from Brendan Kearns to tie it again.
Tigh (two goals, three assists) scored his second goal with 6:04 remaining to win, taking a feed from Renz (two goals, two assists).
“This is a typical Chaminade, St. Anthony’s game,” said Chaminade head coach Jack Moran. “This is the first of three. It starts out a close game, we jump to a lead and they start the second half and take it right back.
“We go up, they go up, we go up, they go up and fortunately we got the last one. These are the great games to be involved in. That is a great team and this is a great win for us. This is the best high school rivalry in sports.”
Joseph Licciardi tallied two goals and two assists, Jared Nugent tallied two goals and one assist and Christopher Buscemi tallied two goals for St. Anthony’s.
“We played hard,” said St. Anthony’s head coach Keith Wieczorek. “We didn’t play well in the first half. You can’t be down 6-3 here and then come back.
“We outplayed them in the second half I felt but we played a poor first half. Hats off to them for the win.”
