HUNTINGTON, N.Y. – Kerry Defliese tallied five goals and Garden City used an early 7-0 run to defeat host St. Anthony’s, 12-5, today in a girls’ lacrosse game featuring two teams from Long Island ranked in the STEPS Lacrosse Top 20.

No. 5 Garden City improved to 9-0. The Bo, 10 Friars fell to 3-2.
“This was definitely a big game for us,” said Defliese. “We came out strong and hard both halves. That was a big key thing for us to play both halves, which we did.
“We have lost to them before by a lot and definitely wanted to come out strong and prove that we are pretty good. This just proves that we have it in us to go far.”
St. Anthony’s Kait Quinn scoref first, but the Trojans ran off seven straight goals to seize a 7-1 halftime lead. The Friars never got close as Michaela Bruno tallied three goals and two assists and Juliana Kubler grabbed eight saves for Garden City.
The Trojans have posted several key wins this year – including a one-goal victory Saturday over Connecticut power Darien on the road – but this was perhaps their best overall performance, their coach said.
“I’m very happy with the way the girls played,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman. “They came in and were ready to go knowing that St. Anthony’s is one of the best teams around.
“I feel this was our first game where we put two halves together. We played one or the other half in other games. It was really nice to see them put everything we were working on together. I’m so happy with the way they played today. This was a great team effort.’
Charlotte Campbell grabbed 14 saves and Ella Bonafede tallied two goals for St. Anthony’s.
