BALTIMORE – After four weeks of MIAA A Conference boys’ lacrosse, four teams find themselves on top of the standings with 6-2 records and one game to play.
Friday at Boys’ Latin, the host Lakers claimed a key 13-11 win over arch-rival Loyola Blakefield to leave BL, the Dons, McDonogh School and St. Paul’s all deadlocked atop the standings.
The win was emotional for many at BL since it was the last home game for storied coach Bob Shriver, who is retiring after the season.
But the win to Shriver was much more for the players.
“I mean this from the bottom of my heart, it’s got nothing to do with me and it’s got everything to do with them,” said Shriver. “It’s the seniors last game; that’s as cool as it gets. I’ve been fortunate enough to be standing here a long time, this is absolutely positively for them.
“The emotions were in the game. It was a knockdown dragout (game), it was pretty emotional from a playing perspective. The BL-Loyola games have been like this for as long as I can remember and this one was no different my goodness gracious.”
“It’s an MIAA special it looks we’re all 6-2 so anything goes Tuesday will say a lot.”
Jake Glatz stood out at the face-off X for BL (14-3, ranked No. 12 in Epoch Lacrosse North America Rankings), which scored three unanswered goals to seize an 12-10 lead. Brendan Mullally had the tying goals and Devin Shewell (four goals, one assist) the go-ahead tally with 5 minutes to play while Logan Wisnauskas added a key insurance tally.
Patrick Spencer added three goals and three three assists for BL while Jack Pezzulla made 13 saves.
Ryan Conrad had three goals and three assists for the Dons (9-3, ranked No. 5).
“The defense played awesome,” said Shewell. “It was Senior Day and our last game on the field so we had to play 48 minutes. it was about heart and I felt we had more heart.”
“It feels incredible,” Spencer added. “Everybody always wants to go out with a win on their last home game, and doing it with Coach Shriver going out makes it that much more special. It was awesome.
“We needed to get the hustle plays. In the begionning they were getting the 50-50s, we needed the ball in our stick to get some movement and get the flow going.”
Loyola coach Jack Crawford gave BL the credit.
“You have to give them credit,” he said. “They they made plays and connected on plays when they had to. You cannot expect to beat them if you are not more efficient and consistent with your possessions, and we weren’t today.”
