STEVENSON, Md. – Zach Goodrich and Bobby Giuffreda combined for 10 of Kent Island 20 goals to help the Buccaneers cruise, 20-7, over River Hill Tuesday to win the Maryland 3A/2A Public Championship at Stevenson University.
Kent Island claimed its second straight state title and finished the year 17-3, with a 16-game winning streak.
The 20 points the Buccaneers put up set a state record for most points in a championship game, for all classifications.
“I am so proud of them and their performance and getting out there and executing at the get go,” said Kent Island head coach Davey Jones. “I thought we did a great job both offensively and defensively and in the middle of the field, setting the tempo.”
River Hill tied the game early in the first quarter at 2-2. Then the Bucs went on a 6-1 run to head into the half leading 8-3.
The scoring wave continued for Kent Island in the third quarter as the Buccaneers scored six unanswered goals to make it 14-3.
“We have done a good job this season in coming out and playing really hard in the third quarter and really try to put that game out of reach,” said Jones.
Stone Boone helped with a hat trick and an assist and Luke Fromert added two goals and two assists for the Bucs.
Jimmy McEneaney led the scoring for the Hawks with five goals.
“I thought our kids didn’t quit. Things didn’t go the way we wanted them to go tonight,” said River Hill head coach Keith Gonsouland. “Obviously we are disappointed with the result. But not disappointed with the season.
“These guys (the seniors) bleed for our program and we are indebted to them. They gave us a lot the last four years.”
