STEVENSON, Md. – Cody Ford scored four goals to spark Howard to a 14-6 victory over Churchill for its first 4A/3A Maryland State title Wednesday at Stevenson University.
Howard finished a perfect 19-0. Last year the Lions were 18-0 until falling to South River, 10-7, in the state finals.
“It’s a great feeling being a state champion,” Ford said. We have a great team and have had a great team my past four years of playing Howard Lacrosse.
“We’ve fallen short each year, losing in the regionals my freshman year, in the state semis (as a sophomore), and then in states last year, so putting it together my senior year feels great.
“And last year’s loss was definitely a lot of motivation for us. Seeing last year’s seniors and the seniors before them end their season with a loss was heartbreaking and we as a group promised that we would finish our year as champions for them.”
The Lions opened with a three-goal lead, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
“I’m proud of all the guys for all the hard work and dedication through the season,” said fifth year head coach Jimmy Creighton (78-14).
The defense for Howard, led by Adam Friedman, was stingy and never allowed the Bulldogs’ offense to get started.
Churchill (17-2) – which had lost only to DC IAC champ Landon got three goals from Reed Moshyedi.
Senior Scott Bruner, committed to Siena, had three goals (and an assist) to increase his total to 88. Middie Nolan Dunnigan added three goals and Brad Zulick had a goal and four assists.
“The seniors came up big all year and did it again tonight,” said Creighton. “They go out on top the way they deserve.”
Junior goalie Collin McClelland, who made some spectacular saves, had a total 16 saves for Howard. The Lions never allowed more than seven goals this season. McClelland finishes his junior season with 133 saves for the Lions.
