From US Lacrosse

Watching the game, it’s highly likely that you might never notice.

He scoops ground balls, makes crisp passes and has an accurate shot. He plays hard and prides himself on his defense and hustle. He looks like any of the other talented players competing at this weekend’s US Lacrosse U15 Boys’ National Championships at River City Sportsplex in Midlothian, Va.us l

And that’s why you may not notice that midfielder Miles Moscato of the 3d Select National team only has one arm. Yup, you read that correctly. He plays lacrosse with a left arm that ends just below the elbow.

Not that it bothers Miles. He was born this way. Just like in other areas of his life, he’s made the necessary adjustments to be an effective lacrosse player.

“I use a lot more deception with my body instead of using stick fakes,” Moscato said. “I play a lot more like a Canadian. I spent a lot of time on YouTube watching how they play.”

Moscato, who lives in West Linn, Oregon, began playing when he was in the third grade, although he admits that he wanted to give up the game after the first year because it seemed so difficult.

With the encouragement of his parents, he stuck with it and evolved his skills to the point that he earned a spot on the varsity as a 9th-grader this past year at West Linn High School. He will proudly tell you that West Linn finished 18-4 and claimed the Oregon state championship last month.

And now, he’s in Richmond, trying to haul in a second championship in a span of eight weeks.

“Miles is a real competitor who likes to test himself,” said 3d coach Matt Rowley. “He doesn’t want to be coached any differently than any other player. He’s got the same expectations and wants to master the same skills.”

Moscato and his 3d Select teammates finished 2-1 in pool play on Friday and earned the number six seed for in the single-elimination championship bracket, which begins Saturday morning. 3d Select faces number 11 seed New Jersey South Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Four teams finished with perfect 3-0 records in pool play, with Long Island Jesters 2018 Black claiming the number one seed based on the first tie-breaker of fewest goals allowed. The Jesters outscored their three opponents, 30-8, on Friday.

“Our face off guys did a great job and got us a lot of possessions today,” said coach Ken Gibbons. “So we had a lot of time on offense.”

One of the benefits of having the top seed is that the Jesters will also having a later starting time Saturday, not taking the field for their first game until 11 a.m.

“The kids were all firmly aware of that fact,” Gibbons joked. “They like sleeping in.”

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), For the Love of the Game 2018 (FLG) and Long Island Express 2018 were the other unbeaten teams and round out the top four seeds.
