“I’m excited to announce Andy German as the first assistant coach at Cleveland State,” CSU head coach Dylan Sheridan said. “Coach German is a proven winner and a players coach. I have coached against and alongside Andy at various levels.

“His experience at Villanova, running their defense and working as their recruiting coordinator as well as working at the Division III, International & high school levels will serve CSU lacrosse well. I’m extremely fortunate to have him in the program and know that he shares my excitement to build Cleveland State into a top-flight Division I lacrosse program.”

German guided St. Joseph’s Prep to the Catholic League championship and a berth in the PIAA boys’ lacrosse championship. He mentored 11 players to the All-Catholic team, including seven who earned first team accolades.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join coach Sheridan and the CSU community,” German said. “The opportunity to build the program from the ground up is a special one and I look forward to seeing the program grow over the coming years. I have great respect for coach Sheridan and I’m honored that he believes in me and wants me to be part of this unique journey.”

German was an assistant coach at Villanova for four years (2010-14), serving as an offensive assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the first three years and the Defensive Coordinator for the final two years. In 2011, German helped the Wildcats to a No. 7 ranking as the Wildcats earned their first-ever at-large berth to the NCAA postseason tournament. The following season, he helped Villanova to new heights after the team was ranked well inside the top-20 for all 16 weeks during the regular season.

In 2013, German helped lead the Wildcats to the Big East regular season title and No. 1 overall seed for the Big East Tournament where the Wildcats fell to eventual NCAA runner-up Syracuse in the title game.

Prior to his stint at Villanova, German was the offensive and recruiting coordinator at Susquehanna for two seasons. He has also served as the assistant coach of the Thailand National Team for the last two years, coaching the team in the 2014 World Games in Denver.

German attended Division III Alfred University for two years before transferring to Villanova for the 2006 season. At Villanova, he developed into a captain and two-year starter as a midfielder. He graduated from Villanova in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science.

MacFarlane (Malvern Prep, La Costa Canyon) named director of lacrosse operations at Maryland

Maryland men’s lacrosse coach John Tillman has announced the hiring of former Malvern Prep assistant Todd MacFarlane as director of lacrosse operations. A native of Crofton, Md., MacFarlane has more than 15 years of coaching experience.

“We are thrilled to welcome Todd to the Maryland lacrosse family,” Tillman said. “Todd comes to Maryland with a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we are excited to have him on board. He is deeply rooted in the mid-atlantic region and will play a key role in the day-to-day aspects of our program.”

MacFarlane spent the last three years at Malvern, serving as the coordinator of external programs and assistant coach of the varsity lacrosse team. As assistant coach, MacFarlane played a key role in the implementation and execution of programs throughout the year, while coaching numerous all-americans. “I am very excited to be a part of the University of Maryland and would like to thank Coach Tillman, Coach Conry, Coach Reppert and the Maryland athletic department for giving me the opportunity to join the Terrapin lacrosse staff,” MacFarlane said. “I am eager to get started and do my part in enhancing what is already a tradition-rich program. My time at Malvern Preparatory School was very special to me and my family and we were very fortunate to be a part of an amazing family there.”

MacFarlane has strong roots in the Philadelphia region, where he was head coach for a number of clubs in both Malvern and Haverford between 2009 and 2013.

After serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1994-98, MacFarlane was highly involved in the growth of lacrosse in California for more than a decade from 1998-2009. He spent the first three years as head coach at La Costa Canyon High School, before serving as head coach at the University of San Diego from 2003-05.

MacFarlane was also the founder of the sports training company, Top Notch Training LLC (2004-09), in addition to being the director of the La Jolla Lacrosse Foundation (2007-09).

MacFarlane attended Arundel High School and played lacrosse for Bud Beardmore at Anne Arundel Community College before finishing his career at Pfeifer University in North Carolina. He was a member of the 2002 Deep South All-Conference and All-Academic Teams.
