Bayport – (9-0) and No. 7 in the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings – avenged a 7-4 loss to Mt. Sinai in last year’s Suffolk County Class C title game and a 14-7 loss in the regular season.

“The kids have been waiting on this one,” said Bayport head coach Ryan Gick. “They had this one marked on the calendar. They matched the effort we were expecting.

“Mt. Sinai is a good team. Our kids played very well today; we won the dirty stuff, ground balls, draw controls and all that stuff.”

The Phantoms broke open a 2-1 game with five goals to close the first half and then took 11 minutes off the clock to open the second half and never allowed the Mustangs (6-2) to get any momentum.

“We were coming in knowing Mt. Sinai is a good team,” said Weeks. “We just spread them out, really worked hard and were moving the ball fast. They were really good on defense.

“It was just a really good game. We are so excited especially coming from the loss to them last year. We wanted to come out and prove that we were the better team and I think we did that.”

Kerrigan Miller tallied two goals and one assist and Kelsi Lonigro tallied one goal and three assists for Bayport.

“You win the middle of the field and you win the game,” said Gick/ “I think our kids really took this one to heart and that was the difference.”

Rebecca Lynch and Erica Shea tallied one goal each for Mt. Sinai.

“They are a heck of a team,” said Mt. Sinai coach Al Bertolone. “We must have played defense 45 out of 50 minutes We couldn’t get the ball out from our end.

“They came out strong and took it to us really early, and we didn’t really recover. We were down 4-1 and got a yellow card and let up three goals at the end of the half. You can’t make mistakes against them.

“They got every 50-50 ball. When we did come up with the ball they got into a trap on the sideline and put a little bit of an 11-man ride on us. All the credit goes to them.”
