Boys’ Latin (MD) veteran mentor Bob Shriver was named the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association High School Coach of the Year at the recent Nike/Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association banquet in Baltimore.

Shriver guided the Lakers to a 19-1 season in 2013. Boys’ Latin was ranked No. 1 in every national poll the entire year until it fell to Loyola Blakefield, 10-9, in overtime in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title game. Shriver has been at Boys’ Latin for 38 year, including the last 34 as head coach and he has won over 450 games and claimed five MIAA crowns while reaching the finals nine other times.

Despite seeing his team bow in the title game, Shriver called the 2013 season “One of the most enjoyable years we as a staff have ever had.

“Obviously, we had a good team; it also was the largest team we ever had in our history. We carried 41 kids and the effort and energy all year was really exceptional.

“Nobody got down about not playing and we had a lot of good players (over 20 Division I commits) and some of them didn’t play much, especially in tight games. But the way they handled it was exceptional. There is no other way to describe it.”

Shriver said his longevity at Boys’ Latin is due to the many longtime coaches and supporters of the program.

“I work at a great school with a lot of great people,” he said. “I coach with a lot of great people. It’s pretty easy to wake up in the morning when you have that.”
