HAVERFORD – Senior Brinton Valis scored five goals and McDonogh School (MD) got key contributions from many sources as the Eagles defeated host Haverford School (PA), 13-8, today in an inter-state opener featuring teams in the top 10 of the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits Rankings.
Valis (Johns Hopkins commit) tallied four straight goals for the No. 9 Eagles to stake his team to a 7-3 lead in the second quarter. The No. 2 Fords never got closer than four goals again.
Junior goalie Jacob Stover (Loyola commit) made nine saves for the Eagles and junior face-off specialist Jordy Elardo (Wagner) won 15 of 23 draws while Robby Black scored three goals.
Haverford got two goals from senior defenseman Connor Keating (Penn).
McDonogh, expected to challenge for a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) title, showed good ball movement and solid defense. The Fords, meanwhile, struggled to generate good shots and got hit with a number of penalties.
“I’m very proud of the guys,” said McDonogh coach Andy Hilgartner. “Like Haverford and everyone on the East Coast, we had a very disjointed preseason with the weather. But we’re never going to use that as an excuse, and neither will they.
“We do have some experience and a lot of guys back. But the two unknowns were in the goal and on faceoffs. Both did a great job.”
Stover made four key saves in the first period to help his team get started.
“Jake Stover was poised in goal and made some great saves and did a great job clearing the ball,” said Hilgartner. “We need to still get better in that area, but it’s early.
“And one thing I love to see is when a player puts in extra time to work. Jordy Elardo was on the field at 6:30 a.m. yesterday working on his faceoffs, trying to get better. When he comes out and plays like he did today, you can’t help but feel awesome for the kid.”
