MINEOLA, N.Y. – Sean Cerrone collected three goals and an assist to lead host Chaminade’s to a 10-5 non-league victory today over fellow Long Island power Ward Melville in a season opener for both teams.

“I thought we played really well,” said Chaminade head coach Jack Moran. “Ward Melville is a great program.

“We were able to defend them early, which was a big key for us. They did a really great job and we were fortunate to get out with a win.”

The Flyers are the defending Catholic League champions and are ranked No. 10 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits North America Rankings. The Patriots, ranked No. 15, are the defending NY Class AAA state champions.

Chaminade started the game on a 5-0 run and Ward Melville was never able to recover.

“We played well in the first half and played a little slow in the second half,” said Cerrone. “Our offense is clicking and we are all excited for this season.”

Chaminade held Ward Melville scoreless until the 5:59 mark of the second quarter. Matt Isnardi grabbed nine saves for Chaminade.

“Offensively we tore it up,” said Chaminade goalie Matt Isnardi, who had nine saves. “Defensively we did a great job.

“We played together, we were vocal and we played tough. This feels great and it is definitely a confidence booster because Ward Melville is a great team.”

Sam Bonafede had two goals and one assist for Chaminade, while Jack Brennan tallied two goals and Jack Tigh added one goal and two assists for Chaminade.

Ward Melville entered a new era under head coach Jay Negus. Negus stepped into the head coaching position this season after coach Mike Hoppey retired.

Thomas Moore grabbed 15 saves, Patrick Roarty tallied two goals and two assists and Dan Bucaro tallied two goals and one assist for Ward Melville.

“We scheduled a real great opponent in Chaminade,” said Negus. “Chaminade is very well coached and they are very athletic. We have a lot to work on.

“We came to play in the second half but not the first half and you need to play four quarters in order to win.”
