SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. – Joseph Licciardi tallied three goals and one assist to boost host St. Anthony’s to a 12-7 victory over Iona Prep today in the Catholic High School Athletic Association.
The win was much-needed for the perennial power Friars, who opened the season with two defeats – including Saturday’s 11-10 overtime loss at Immaculata (N.J.).
“We definitely needed this win,” said midfielder Licciardi. “It’s good; it will get us going after the first two losses. Hopefully this will start a run we have Holy Trinity Thursday, Delbarton Friday and Chaminade next Wednesday. We are ready to make a run.”
St. Anthony’s jumped out to a 4-1 lead by the 6:55 mark of the second quarter, but the lead didn’t last long vs. the Gaels (1-1), who lost to St. Anthony’s last year by only a goal.
Iona Prep’s Matt O’Donell scored off a pass from John Bouturcira to start a 3-0 run that tied the game at 6 with 6:33 left in the third quarter. St. Anthony’s answered with two back to back goals and later stretched the lead to 10-6.
Michael Laviano tallied three goals, Greg Galligan tallied two goals and one assist and Jack Concannon grabbed eight saves for St. Anthony’s.
“That’s a well coached team,” said St. Anthony’s head coach Keith Wieczorek. “Any time you play Iona they do a good job.
“I felt like we should have been up by more at the half then we were and in the third quarter exactly what you say not to do happened. But credit to our kids; they dug down and opened things up again.
“It was a good gut check for us. We shot the ball about 50 times; we just have to finish. That will happen one of these game.”
For Iona Prep, Bouturcira tallied two goals and one assist, Riley Aviles tallied two goals and Charlie McAllister grabbed eight saves for Iona Prep.
“St. Anthony’s is a very good team,” said Iona Prep head coach Rick Trizano. “They came out prepared. I think they were anxious to get a win on the boards and we played well but we had a lot of mental mistakes and too many turnovers.
“When you play a team like St. Anthony’s those are the things that will do you in.”
