BALTIMORE – Host and top-ranked Boys’ Latin scored three straight goals to close the game today and survived a major scare in a 14-13 Maryland Interscholasitic Athletic Association (MIAA) victory over St. Mary’s Annapolis.

Shack Stanwick collected three goals and six assists for the Lakers (8-0, 2-0), No. 1 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits Rankings. T Moyer scored the game-winner with 1:08 to play after Colin Chell tied it off a Stanwick feed with 2:23 to play.

Keegan O’Connor had pulled the Lakers within 13-12 after the Saints (6-3, 0-2) had scored three straight goals to open the fourth period.

“I feel badly for St. Mary’s they played a great game quite honestly and in many respects we probably didn’t deserve to win,” said Boys’ Latin coach Bob Shriver.

“But the flip side is I have to give our guys a lot of credit for coming back from a couple goal deficits. When we possessed the ball we got great opportunities.”

Stanwick had a standout game in his patented playmaker role, while Patrick Spencer had four goals and an assist and Chell had a hat trick. Cole Robertson had a seven goal game for the Saints.

“(with) St. Mary’s we knew coming in they were going to be a really good team, with a good face off guy, good shooters, good defense and a good goalie, “ said Stanwick. “I give (our) guys a lot of credit, we battled back.”

For the first time this season BL found itself trailing at the half, 9-7, and the Lakers went through two goalies by that point. BL made a gutsy move by putting third string netminder Jack Pezzulla (seven saves) in for the second half.

“He ultimately kept us in that game,” said Stanwick on Pezzulla’s play in goal.

St. Mary’s coach Ben Rubeour said his team was heartbroken, but would gain confidence going forward.

“We believe this is a process to get better each day,” he said. “I think we got better from last Friday (one-goal loss to St. Paul’s).

“The biggest hurdle is we have to learn how to finish some games. But I think we are a team that continues to improve.”
