MOORESTOWN, N.J. – Tristan McGinley scored with just under 10 minutes to play and host Moorestown held on to defeat Suffern (N.Y.), 9-8, today.
The Quakers, No. 2 in the Brine/TopLaxRecruits Rankings, improved to 9-0 with their 60th straight win. Suffern, which had only lost to Long Island power Garden City, fell to 4-2.
“There was definitely an energy in all of us to score,” said McGinley. “It was a tie game, and personally, we refused to lose this game.
“They are an awesome team, and great competition for us.”
“I have to give a lot of credit to Suffern, as they played us tough,” added Moorestown coach Deanna Knobloch. “They have some very good lacrosse players, and it could have gone either way. I’m extremely happy that we pulled out the win.”
In the final five minutes, Suffern held the ball behind the Moorestown net looking for a scoring opportunity. But the Moorestown defense gave few openings.
“That was their game plan, and it worked well for them,” said Coach Knobloch. “They had possession of the ball, which is the name of this game. We came up with the big plays to keep them from scoring.”
Gabby Cooper, the Moorestown goalie, made one key save in the final minutes and another Suffern shot went over the net. Marie McCool made a key steal in the final seconds to ice it.
This is the second straight week that the Quakers have defeated an elite out-of-state team. Last week, they defeated Vero Beach (FL), 13-5
“We’ve always played out-of-state schools,” said Knobloch. “We’re glad that we played Suffern, and they gave us the game that they did.”
Suffern was held to just two goals in the second half, getting goals by Leary and Jordan Drab. In the same time, Moorestown had four goals, with two by McCool, Kierstyn Voiro, and the McGinley game-winner.
“What can I say about McCool’s performance?” said Coach Knobloch. “She is an incredible player, and I don’t know what I’m going to do when she’s no longer on the field. Her effort, both offensively and defensively, she has been our saving grace this season.”
Suffern had the halftime lead 6-5, as Bailey Parrot gave the Mounties the lead with 8.4 seconds per the break.
Leary had three first half goals, as her goals increased Suffern’s lead to 5-2 in the first. Hannah Newman and Dana Gisonno added first half goals.
While Leary led the Mounties with four goals, she was not outdone by McCool, who also added two more goals in the first half for four overall. McCool, McGinley, and Kayla Pruitt combined for three straight Moorestown goals to make it 5-5.
“It definitely put more pressure on us to come back,” said McGinley. “You have to be confident, and you can’t hang your head throughout the whole game. You can’t think for a second that … Obviously, it’s possible that we can lose games, but they were an incredible team and great competition for us. Again, losing is not an option for us.”
Alex O’Donnell scored the other Quakers goal in the first half.
Mikalia Cheeseman was the Mounties goalie for the entire game. Before the second half, Moorestown put Cooper, a junior, in the net, replacing freshman Jess Goralski.
Goralski allowed six goals, while Cooper allowed just two goals.
