Four elite Colorado boys’ teams played on the big stage Saturday in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos.
First, Mountain Vista (10-2) beat Kent Denver (9-2) for the first time, 12-8. Then, Cherry Creek (10-2) toppled defending state champion Arapahoe (10-2), 14-5, before Colorado beat Colorado State 9-6 in a big MCLA contest.

“It was cool to play in the stadium. I have always wondered what it was like to play there after watching so many professional games,” said Mountain Vista senior attackman Shane McKenna (Christopher Neeport commit), who had three goals and two assists. “The win was big for our program, and really felt good on a big stage at Mile High.”
Also for Mountain Vista, Alec Womack had three goals and an assist, Christian Barker had two goals and two assists and Colin Munro dished four assists.
“It was an unbelievable experience playing in that stadium,” added Munro. “It was neat to get a taste of what being ‘big time’ feels like.
“As for the win, it feels great knowing that we can beat some of the states best teams. I think it will give us tons of momentum as we move closer to the playoffs.”
Cherry Creek got six goals from Ryan Arthur in the first half while Broderick Vitalie stood out at the face-off X. Mike McCauley had three goals and an assist and Austin Bridgeforth added two gols and an assist.
West Ranch (CA) player scores 12 goals
Senior J.K. Torres of West Ranch (CA) set a state record with 12 goals in a 22-6 win over the Simi Valley on April 7.
Torres, committed to d3 Aurora University, was one short of the national record, set by Nicholas Treon of Danville High in Danville, Pa., in 2013, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.
The Wildcats, in their second season as a CIF-sanctioned team, are 7-2 and Torres has 42 goals, according to signalscv.com.
Ridgefield (CT) 7, Garden City (NY) 5
Dylan Maher (two goals) had the game-winner and Simon Mathias also scored twice as Ridgefield won a hige game for Connecticut lacrosse Saturday with its 7-5 win over two-time defending NY Class B state champion Garden City.
Montgomery County (MD) Boys Lacrosse League Players of the Week
Recent honorees:
4A/3A South Player of the Week – Churchill’s #32 Louis Dubick (Jr. Attack). Louis currently leads Montgomery County with 33 goals, 21 assists, for 54 points.
4A/3A East Player of the Week – Paint Branch’s #7 Senior Midfield Alex Johny. In three games this week, Alex had 7 goals, recording a hat trick against both Springbrook and Blake.
4A/3A West Player of the Week – Quince Orchard #29 Brent Greenberg (Sr. Attack). In two division games this week he had 11 goals with 7 assists (3g/3a v RM and 8g/4a v Magruder).
3A/2A Player of the Week – Rockville’s #4 JT Doyle (So. Mid). JT had 1 Goal, 9 ground balls, and won 100% of his face-offs (17 of 17).
Girls
Coppell (TX) gets No. 2 seed in state tourney’s North District
The Coppell Cowgirls (11-8) got the No. 2 seed in the North District of the state playoffs in Texas. Coppell, which finished with five straight wins, is led by sophomore Mia Harp (42 goals, 62 draws, 76 groundballs), sophomore Kailey Rivera (81 groundballs, 33 take aways), senior Lauren Cullison (29 goals), sophomore Ashley Bartlett (26 goals) and sophomore Delaney Dendy (24 goals, 49 draws).
Milton bounces back
Milton (10-3, ranked No. 14 in the Brine/TopLaxRecruits Rankings) bounced back from a 10-9 overtime loss Wednesday to Philly power Strath Haven by defeating another Philly power, Radnor, 15-8, the following day. It was Youth night at Milton and over 100 youth players attended the game and lined up on the field to make a tunnel for Milton girls to run through during warm ups.
Milton raced to a 4-0 lead and was never threatened.
“We were a totally different team tonight compared to last night,” said Milton coach Tim Godby. “We had the energy and enthusiasm we needed to play at a high level. We made a couple of tweaks in our offense and defense to start the game and it worked, but the main thing was our girls were pumped and ready to play.”
Shahpar Mirza had 13 saves and Brooke Winsness scored three goals while Mackenzie Lech contributed two goals and three assists and Hannah Davis had a goal, two assists, six draws won and four draw controls.
Milton will face 3 more elite teams from out of state this weekend during the Legacy Lacrosse Cup on April 25-26; Bishop Irenton (VA), Carondelet (defending Northern Champions from California), and Loyola (Illinois state cvhampions).
