MINEOLA, N.Y. – Sean Cerrone converted a pass from Owen Rodgers with one second left in overtime to boost host Chaminade to an 8-7 victory over rival St. Anthony’s. in a Catholic High School Athletic Association showdown.

The win lifted the Flyers, No. 6 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits Rankings, to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the CHSAA. The Friars are 6-3 and 1-1.

“Owen Rodgers got the ground ball for us and gave me the ball and I figured I’d go to the rack,” said Cerrone. “Why not? I had no idea how much time was left.

“St. Anthony’s is a great team. This game is always a battle, never a blowout. This definitely gives us confidence knowing we can beat them because they are a great team.”

Chaminade took an 6-2 lead at the 11:08 mark of the third quarter, but St. Anthony’s responded with a 3-0 run to pull within one goal heading into the fourth quarter. Brendan Kearns scored to put the Flyers ahead, 7-5, but JT Caputo pulled the Friars within one.

Then, with 1:05 remaining, Joseph Licciardi found Eamon Campbell for the tying goal to send the game into overtime.

“This was two really good teams and overtime is about right,” said Chaminade head coach Jack Moran, “Both teams deserved to win and we were fortunate enough to get a stop and have our shot go in.

“I’m expecting the next two against them to be pretty close to this but I’m not sure they can be any more exciting than this.”

Rodgers tallied two goals and one assist, Jack Brennan tallied one goal and two assists and Matt Isnardi grabbed nine saves for Chaminade.

Licciardi tallied three goals and two assists, Campbell tallied one goal and two assists and Jack Concannon grabbed seven saves for St. Anthony’s.

“Another great game,” said St. Anthony’s head coach Keith Wieczorek. “You can’t go down 5-2 to a team that strong and expect to come out on the winning end.

“We didn’t play well in the first half and when we battled back to tie it up I thought we had a chance. The kids competed hard and that’s all we can ask. We will see them two more times.”
