WESTTOWN, Pa – It’s a typical, overused cliche statement, when a lacrosse player says his team wins due to good team chemistry.

South Shore won the 2020 AA championship

But Logan Hone was happy to say the South Shore 2020 travel team – with 12 of its 20 members coming from St. Augustine Prep – has good team chemistry, and he has plenty to back it up.

“We do have good team chemistry,” said Hone, a midfielder who attends St. Augustine. “We are all really good friends and we’re with each other every single day at school and in the summer. We have chemistry other teams really don’t have.”

This weekend South Shore showed its form by winning the Victory Events Boys’ Summer Slam 2020 AA championship, topping Upstate Lacrosse (NY), 6-4, in the title game Sunday at Westtown School. In all, South Shore went 5-0, downing Peninsula Gold, 8-6, in the semifinals.

South Shore’s Logan Hone (left), David Burr

Hone had two goals and David Burr, of St. Augustine, added a pair of goals and an assist as South Shore bolted to a 4-0 lead and fended off an Upstate rally. Colin Wingate and Kyle Bartleson, both from St. Augustine, each scored once.

“We played a complete game,” said Burr. “We had some bumps the first couple games, but we came out here and had a complete game.”

“We all played really hard; we wanted it more than all the other teams,” added Hone. “All-around, we played really well; in goal, on defense and we faced off well. I thought we moved the ball well on offense.”

Colin Kelly (CBA Syracuse) had two goals to pull Upstate within 4-3 late in the first half while Wyatt Auyerr (CBA Syracuse) and Kyle Caves (Liverpool) each scored once.

2021 AA – Green Turtle (MD) 11, South Shore 2

Jack Horrigan (McDonogh), Matt Greaver (Boys’ Latin), Tucker Hebert (Gilman) and Jake Tompkins (Gilman) led the offense while Bill Dwan Jr. (Loyola Blakefield) and Gus Kalas (Gonzaga) paced the defense.

2020 A – Duke’s Virginia 7, True Ohio 6

Greene Turtle won the 2021 AA title

Richard Kidwell (Cave Spring 2020), Kenyon John (Patrick Henry 2019) and Zach Martin (Cave Spring 2019) each scored twice while Spencer Amacher (Blacksburg 2020) added one and Tye Whitlowe (Patrick Henry 2020) and Jayme Hollimion (Blacksburg 2019) stood out in goal.

Mason Meulenberg (St. Anne’s-Belfield), who led the defense, said, “We won with hustle plays and good defense.”

Added attackman Cade Smith (Patrick Henry 2020): “The defense definitely played really strong and we moved it a lot better than we usually do. We got a lot of good looks; we didn’t convert them all, but we were possessing the ball and not turning it over.”

Duke’s VA wins the 2019 A championship

WESTTOWN, Pa. – For the third straight year Brotherhood has won the 2019 AA Division championship at the Victory Events Boys’ Summer Slam.

Brotherhood claims the 2019 AA title at the Boys’ Summer Slam

On Sunday Brotherhood (NJ) raced to an 8-3 lead and held off Zombies (PA), 8-7, for the title at Westtown School.

Brotherhood, 11-0 so far this year with a title at Prime Time, went 6-0 and outscored its first five foes, 47-17 – including a 9-5 win over Zombies earlier Sunday.

“It all starts with the GBs,” said Brotherhood 2019 attackman Max Paparozzi (Northern Highland-NJ), a Wagner commit who had two goals and two assists. “We came out in the first game and outplayed them in the GBs. We planned on doing that again. We also planned on sliding with the body, but in a couple goals we didn’t got there. We got the win; it was sloppy at the end, not the way we wanted to end it.”

Zombies, comprised of players from Northeast PA, staged a comeback behind 2020 midfielder/FO specialist Anthony Capruscio (Crestwood, PA-high 126 goals in 2018 HS season), who had three goals and an assist and pulled his team within 8-7 with his third goal and an assist to TJ herron (Dallas, 2020 ATT) with 1:45 to play. But Capruscio was hit with a penalty with 1:08 to play and Brotherhood held onto the final possession to cinch it. Michael Starbuck (Dallas, 2020 ATT) also had two goals and Wyatt Malia (Crestwood, 2020 attack) scored once while David DeSousa (Central Dauphin, 2020) had seven saves.

The rest of the game belonged to Brotherhood, which led, 4-1, and then 5-2 at halftime before stretching it to 8-3 as John Corry (Glen Rock, 2019 ATT) added two goals and one assist and Travis Hinds (Riverdell, 2019 ATT), Joseph Nirchio (Northern Highland, 2019 MF), Kyle Muldoon (Perarl River-NY, 2019 MF) and Erik Fioccola (Fairlawn, 2019 ATT) each scored once.

“Our chemistry is insane,” said paparozzi. “We have had the same group for 5 or 6 years and we know where each other is going to be on the field. We execute all the plays.”

Corry said the team enjoys playing together.

“It all starts with our chemistry, as Max said,” he said “It’s easy to pass it around when you trust everyone. It’s easy to feed when you know they will catch it and score.

“Our goal is to not lose the whole summer. So far we have done that. We want to keep doing that and win every tournament.”

This camp will be a great opportunity to see what being a Student-Athlete in the Lehigh lacrosse program is all about. You will stay in the same dorms, use the same facilities, and have the opportunity to meet and work with current Lehigh players and coaching staff. All this, while affording our staff the opportunity to learn more about you as a person and player with in the highly competitive showcase format.

Off the field, players will take part in a strength and speed training clinic (results will be given to take home at the end of camp), a recruiting & academic seminar, and a leadership/character building seminar. The mission of the Lehigh Valley Showcase is to help prospective student athletes gain visibility within the recruiting landscape, while helping them grow as players and as people

Phoenixville, PA based Ultimate Events and Sports is preparing to welcome over 320 teams to their latest girls’ lacrosse tournament, The Grind. The Grind, which will feature youth and high school teams from 17 states, will take place in Chester County, PA, at several nearby fields from July 6-8.

“We are very excited to welcome another talented group of teams to this year’s The Grind,” said Ultimate Events and Sports Co-Owner Rebecca Wells. “The Grind is one of the summer’s premier tournaments, and we are excited to give many of the nation’s elite players an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of coaches from many competitive colleges.

Hundreds of college coaches have confirmed their attendance, including coaches from programs like Boston University, Colegate, Fairfield, George Mason, Navy, Northwestern, Princeton, Temple, UMass, Louisville, Michigan, Notre Dame, Villanova, and Yale.

One of the largest and most competitive tournaments in the nation, The Grind is also a USL National Qualifier for U13s-U11s. Teams will be grouped by similar levels of play to help ensure all games are competitive. The Grind offers more playing time than most tournaments, offering athletes more opportunity to be seen by college coaches, giving teams the best value for their fee.

“The Grind is one of our highest attended events by both players and coaches, and each year we hear stories about players making meaningful connections with the college coaches that attend. We are excited for another opportunity to connect players with coaches across the nation.”

Learn more about The Grind, and see a full list of coaches attending, here:

TABERNACLE, N.J. – It was the perfect ending for Garden State Elite’s 2019 club team today.

Tori Accardo (Eastern Regional, Cincinnati commit) scored in sudden death overtime to give Garden State a 7-6 win over the York Invaders, 7-6, at Seneca High School in the Victory Events Girls’ Summer Slam 2019 championship game.

For many players on this Garden State Elite team, it was their final game together as a team.

“This team has been together for five or six years,” Garden State Elite head coach Liz Cook said. “They have been playing together forever, and they really work well together.

“It’s good that a lot of our players come from the same high school (eight players attend Notre Dame-NJ or Eastern Regional) because they work so well together. They gel beautifully. This team is really good at sharing the ball and they know each other tendencies.”

Garden State Elite -which had an extra man to open the overtime – won the draw control and dished it to Accardo who converted quickly.

“At halftime, our coaches gave us a big speech,” Accardo said. “We got our energy even though this was our sixth game this weekend and we were all very tired. We dug deep for it and got it done. Myself and another girl on our team know their goalie, so we’re definitely familiar with her. We knew what she was going to do in this game.”

In the morning, these two teams also played each other. However, the York Invaders won that meeting 7-5, and finished 4-0 in pool play. Garden State was 2-2 in pool play.

“We knew we had to shoot around her [in the championship game],” Cook said of the Invaders goalie. “We knew she was going to protect high so we had to shoot very low on her.

“That’s exactly what Tori did. We knew she had the hot hand, so after we met for halftime, we told the team to get the ball into Tori’s hands. That’s exactly what happened after we got the draw. It couldn’t have worked out any better.

“We also knew that we had a player advantage at least for the first two minutes in overtime, because their player received the yellow card before the end of regulation. We knew we wanted to win the draw, then go down and take a really smart shot. We had two minutes on our side, but if Tori was able to get the ball, she was told to go to the goal. It was right out of the script that we had talked about.”

York led 4-2 at halftime. There was a bit of confusion on the Garden State Elite sidelines, as they thought the game was over instead of playing an extra stanza.

Tori Accardo had the game-winner

“We thought it was a 25-minute game,” Cook said. “We thought we had actually lost. So, when we found out at halftime that there was another half, we got more energy from halftime, as we believed that we could do it. I asked them, ‘Do we believe that we can do it?’ We all gathered ourselves and looked at the new half as 0-0. Once the new half started, we went after it. This is a really short field, so it threw us off, as it’s different for us.”

Madi Tare (Trinity) gave the Invaders the 1-0 lead, before Accardo tied the game for Garden State Elite. York then scored the next three goals- two by Amanda Willigerod (Cumberland Valley) and one by Baylee West (Hershey). Danielle Losier (Notre Dame-NJ) scored for Garden State Elite before halftime.

Accardo began the scoring in the second half, before Madison Cowdin (Eastern), Losier, and Lauren Johns (Bishop Eustace) scored. York tied the game at 6-6 with back-to-back goals, as West and Tare scored.
