Unfortunately, due to the forecasted temperatures and the threat of frost, the grass surface at Citizens Bank Park cannot be used for lacrosse games Friday night.Charity Showdown

The 2014 Philly Charity Showdown will be held nearby at the South Philadelphia Athletic Field at 10th and Bigler Streets. This is right across I-76 from the ballpark (see graphic). Additionally there is plenty of space at the Stadium to warm up. Players should arrive dressed in their lacrosse uniforms and gear.

Despite the change in playing surface, the cause of the event has not changed. NXTsports has been working hard on this event for more than six months and remain on track to raise over $30,000 to support the Thomas Jefferson University Foundation’s Comprehensive Concussion Center. Accordingly, NXTsports still plans to donate all net ticket proceeds to the Jefferson Hospital Concussion Center. If any advance ticket buyers, though, wish to request a refund due to this development, NXTsports will honor those requests and will begin processing them within a week.

Click here for more info on the event and a link to purchase tickets.

Philly Charity Showdown Schedule
5 p.m. – Seventh grade Pennsylvania All-Stars vs. New Jersey All-Stars.
5:50 p.m. – Eighth grade Pennsylvania All-Stars vs. New Jersey All-Stars.
6:40 p.m. – Episcopal Academy (PA) vs. St. Augustine Prep (NJ)
7:30 p.m. – LB3 Atlanta (GA) vs. Freedom Lacrosse (PA)

PHILADELPHIA – Frigid temperatures and a last-minute move to a new venue did little to remove the luster of the annual Philly Charity Showdown Friday night in South Philly.

The NXTsports event, originally slated to be held for the second year at the Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park, was moved (due to weather concerns) just hundreds of yards away to the South Philly Supersite, a high school stadium that nonetheless provided an ideal backdrop for an event that featured six games, drew over 70 college coaches and benefited the Thomas Jefferson University Foundation’s Comprehensive Concussion Center.

LB3's Mick Upchurch

LB3’s Mick Upchurch

Below are quick recaps of the games and interviews with players that shined:

LB3 Atlanta 4, Freedom (PA) 3

LB3 built a 4-1 lead and held off a late rally by Freedom to claim the tight win. Mick Upchurch,a 2017 defenseman from McCallie School (TN), helped lead the LB3 defense.

“It’s great to come out and play for a great cause,” said Upchurch. “Any lacrosse is fun, but whern playing got a great cause like this ujnder big lights and great competition is amazing. I really wanted to prove that I could play witht he older kids and show the coaches at LB3 that I could hang iwth them and play with anybody in the country.”

Did Upchurch see the coaches on the sideline? “There were a good bit of them, but I try not to think about it too much since it’s a little bit of an intimidation factor.”

What went well today? “We talked really well on defense and our offense played really well together. Our goalies played great. Brad Hodoval (Mercer commit) probably had 10 or 15 saves – we just played really well as a team.”

Mesa Fresh (PA) 8, HEADstrong (PA) 7

Mesa Fresh's Connor Mosebrook

Mesa Fresh’s Connor Mosebrook

Connor Mosebrook (2017 MF, Haverford School) and JohnNostrant (2017 MF, Haverford, Penn State) each had two goals for Mesa. Tyler Kostack (2016 attack, Marple Newtown, High Point) and Michael Gerzabek (2016 MF, Springfield-Delco) each had two goals for HEADstrong.

Mosebrook:“It’s really cool to come out here and play for a real cause. We’re all here for one thing and it’s cool to be a part of it. It was a close game; we know a couple of the kids, some attend my school so it’s a lot of fun. I just wanted to get better and take a opportunity for our team to get closer.”

Laxachusetts (MA) 7, NXT (PA) 5

Laxachusetts' Owen Allen

Laxachusetts’ Owen Allen

Thomas Hale (2017 ATT) scored two goals for Laxachusetts to overcome three goals by NXT’s Colby Smith (2017 MF, Hempfield, Ohio State).

Laxachusetts 2016 ATT Allen (St. Mark’s, MA, scored one goal): “It’s a lot of fun; lacrosse is the best sport around. And it’s aalways a lot of fun playing for a good cause and having two good teams. I think at Laxachusetts we always play hard, we are always riding hard and even if you make a bad play you’re always giving that effort. You try to tune them (the college coaches) out and earn your spot.”

St. Augustine Prep (NJ) 8, Episcopal Academy (PA) 3

St. Augustine Prep's Drew Lewis

St. Augustine Prep’s Drew Lewis

Joe Eisele (2015 ATT, committed to Delaware) scored two goals for the Hermits. Substitute player Matt Dellacroce won 7 of 11 face-offs for EA.

St. Augustkine’s Drew Lewis, a 6-7 uncommitted 2015 defenseman, helped lead the defense: “It’s a good feeling that we can play the game that we love and do it for a good cause on a big stage.

“I just wanted to play my best and get some looks. I did whatever I could to get some looks. I am looking to play club, D1, D3. We’re getting ready for the season and looking to go farther than we did last year and shot for a state championship.”

8th Grade All-Star Game: New Jersey 7, Pennsylvania 6 (Braveheart)

NJ's James Pendergist

NJ’s James Pendergist

James Pendergist (Brielle Elementary/Middle School, Manasquan) scored the winner in Braveheart to cap a back-and-forth game. Andrew murphy scored two goals for NJ while Adam Salvaggio notched two goals and Jack Henderson and Gavin Tygh combined to win 10 of 15 face-offs for PA.

Pendergist: “It was great. It was tiring, but great all-around. I was involved in (community service) at school, so this is great. I was nervous; I didn’t think I was going to have to go Braveheart.”

What was Pendergist’s plan when he gained possession in Braveheart? “I heard everybody on the sidelines say, ‘He’s a lefty, he’s a lefty, but I’m a righty. It feels great to beat Pennsylvania; coming in I didn’t think we would win, but we pulled it out.”

7th Grade All-Star Game: Pennsylvania 7, New Jersey 6

Champ Doyle (Malvern Prep) scored the game-winner with just under a minute remaining after New Jersey had rallied from a 5-1 deficit with the help of two goals each by Maxwell Drift and Bailey Lanzi. Danny Mallee scored twice for PA.

PA 7th Grade All-Stars, from left, James Chastain, Champ Doyle, Gabriel Goforth, Drew Pettinelli

PA 7th Grade All-Stars, from left, James Chastain, Champ Doyle, Gabriel Goforth, Drew Pettinelli

Doyle: “It was very exciting to be in this venue and play fro a great cause. I think we kept our composure and didn’t let them get into our heads and relaxed and just scored the winning goal.”

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – New Egypt (N.J.) 2017 face-off specialist Kyle Prouty (of NJLC) claimed the King of the X championship Saturday at the Philly Showcase.

Prouty, who answered these questions, defeated Council Rock South 2016 Brendan Petterson (Bucks Select) in the finals.

Kyle Prouty, with NXT Showcase Lacrosse Director Brett Manney, wins the King of the X at the Philly Showcase

Q. How tiring and competitive was it out there today?
Prouty:
“It was very competitive for me today. Coming down the stretch thought I was confident.”

Q. What were the strategies you had today to get to this championship?
Prouty:
“I train hard all the time with the Faceoff Academy. The guys there help me to no end and working as hard as I can helped lead me to this victory.”

Q. How will you adjust to the new face-off rules? What techniques did you take from the Faceoff Academy?
Prouty:
“The bad thing I do is throw my elbow on the ground and now I shy away from that and tuck it (elbow) on the inside. I have my quick hands which is really helpful for me to get that clamp down and get the ball out.”

Q. What were able to do to get the win? How did you counter your opponent?
Prouty:
“First off you have to be able to handle the pressure. I knew I had it and that’s what led me to my win. What helped me was the timing of the whistle and I just exhaled, and I take a big breath when I go down, which keeps me loose. And I am able to time the whistle really well.”

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – Conestoga (PA) 2016 LSM Sam Bouhdery said he never expected to named the MVP (high point scorer) at Saturday’s Philly Showcase.

Conestoga 2016 LSM Sam Bouhdary (NXT)

Conestoga 2016 MVP and LSM Sam Bouhdary (NXT)

“I was definitely surprised,” said Bouhdery. “I came in here just to work my hardest and fly 110 percent, and I did that. I have been training really hard in the off-season and it showed here. I flew on the field when the play went upfield and I think my transition (play) helped.”

Bouhdery was one of many Fab 40 All-Stars that shined at Episcopal Academy as more than 120 coaches flocked to see the nation’s elite 2016 and 2017 players. This is the first of several articles highlighting Fab 40 All-Stars.

Sam Bouhdery, Conestoga (PA), 2016 LSM, NXT LC

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Bouhdery:
“It was more than I expected, to be honest. The competition was great. I have played with some of these guys at various events and some are from my club team, so I’s great to play with them again.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Bouhdery:
“I am looking to play college lacrosse, but I am looking more for academics and location and than lacrosse. I kind of want to go out west; that’s my preference. Academically, my grades are going well and, athletically, I think I can bring a certain speed and transition to a college program. I can get the ball down with my stick pretty quickly. ”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Bouhdery:
“Definitely to go 110 percent. Obviously, you are going to make mistakes, but if you’re going 110 percent it doesn’t matter.”

Trinity Pawling 2016 LSM Tanner Baldin (Edge)

Trinity Pawling 2016 LSM Tanner Baldin (Edge)

Tanner Baldin, Trinity Pawling (NY), from Ontario, 2016 LSM, Edge Lacrosse

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Baldin:
“It’s a lot different than what I am used to, coming down here. I have never been to a big, big event like this. It’s really tough; every single kid can play and if you let down for a minute the ball is in the back of the net. I knew it was a big event; the Philly Showcase is always a big event. I wanted to go out there and work hard and whatever happens, happens. There’s tons of good kid with the same goals. It’s a lot of fun. Obviously, I did something right to make it to the All-Star Game.”

What adjustments do you need to make to play against American players?
Baldin:
“I haven’t really played the American game a lot down here. With my box (experience), it’s easy to push the ball. I feel like I have the advantage over some, but in other ways I am not used to dodge and re-dodge, so I am getting used to that.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Baldin:
“I think I am going into civil engineering, so that kind of narrows down my choices. I am looking to go D1 and whoever has (may major) to offer is something to look at. I think every school needs a Canadian because of our box (background). We can push the ball. I like to press out between the lines, I am tenacious between the lines.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Baldin:
“I learned there’s a lot of kids competing and if you do get a spot in a college program, be grateful for it.”

Matt Cameron, Blue Ridge School (VA), of British Columbia, 2017 MF, Seattle Starz

Blue Ridge School (VA) 2017 MF Matt Cameron (Seattle Starz)

Blue Ridge School (VA) 2017 MF Matt Cameron (Seattle Starz)

What were your goals and did you feel you reached them?
Cameron:
“I just felt like I wanted to play the best I could play and if someone saw and thinks I could be good enough to play at their school, that would be great. I feel like I did that; I made the Fab 40 All-Star game so I feel I met my goal.”

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Cameron:
“It was really different. Back home we play one handed – in box – and down here they are dodging two hands and going down the alley. It wasn’t too hard an adjustment, and I felt i played well.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Cameron:
“I am really into history and any school that has that major is good, but I feel I am a good middie, smart, I move the ball and play good D so I think I will be alright.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Cameron:
“I need two hands!”

Northport (NY) 2017 MF Ryan Magnuson (Team 91)

Northport (NY) 2017 MF Ryan Magnuson (Team 91)

Ryan Magnuson, Northport (N.Y.), 2017 MF Team 91

What were your goals and did you feel you reached them?
Magnuson:
“I just wanted to come here and play my best and make the All-Star team. I had two goals so I was proud of myself. I’d say my dad’s motivation helped, me a lot. My coach helped and my team was good.”

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Magnuson:
“It was the best competition I have seen so far. We all go to showcases and know each other. Players like us mesh well since we know how to play the game.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Magnuson:
“The college that wants me there and wants me to play there. I think I’m a good offensive middie that uses both hands; I dodge and I can can score.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Magnuson:
“Just keep playing hard no matter what!”

Christian Blackwell, Patrick Henry (VA), 2016 MF, Virginia Elite

Patrick Henry 2016 MF ChristianBlackwell (Virginia Elite)

Patrick Henry (VA) 2016 MF ChristianBlackwell (Virginia Elite)

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Blackwell:
“Everyone here plays two-handed and they move off the ball a lot better than most kids in high school. I had to adjust to that and make sure I was moving a lot more on offense and, defensively, if you move your head and you’re not looking at your guy you’re going to get beat. In the transition game, you can lose your man easily.”

What were your goals and did you feel you reached them?
Blackwell:
“My main purpose coming here as a junior was to exercise all my options and have some colleges that hadn’t seen me before get a chance to come look at me. I think I did a really good job and I played the best I could; I am happy with how I played.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Blackwell:
“I’d say I need to be a little more two-handed. I have worked on my left a lot, but I need to be able to rip it more. I need to understand when to take shots and when to hit guys, and understand slide patterns a little more from crease poles and when to hit guys (with a pass).”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Blackwell:
“I’ve visited Hampden Sydney and I am interested in a couple smaller D3 schools, and I talked to some D1s and on lower end of the spectrum some club teams. My goals is to find a school I love and if they happen to have lacrosse, go after it whole heartedly. I would never go to school just to play lacrosse; you could get injured or burned out.

“If I end up participating in collegiate lacrosse at any level, I would hope to bring good decision-making and field recognition to a team. A huge part of lacrosse is just knowing where your teammates will be, and when to get them the ball. If you can recognize what a defense is giving you, then you really have great opportunities to exploit their mistakes. I would definitely do my best to bring a high IQ to a team. However, I still have a lot of learning to do.”
