TOWSON, Md. – Timmy Kelly scored with less than a minute left in overtime today to lift host Calvert Hall to a stunning 11-10 victory over Malvern Prep in an early-season thriller between top teams from Baltimore and Philly.
The Cardinals (3-0) rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit and later a 10-7 deficit and sent it into overtime on a goal with 4.9 seconds left in regulation by freshman Jacob Kelly (two goals) off a Timmy Kelly (two goals, four assists) feed.
After Malvern took the 10-7 lead in the fourth period, the Cardinals pulled within 10-8 on a Jason Brown (three goals) tally off a Timmy Kelly dish. Then Brown made it 10-9 with 2:50 to play.
Omari DeBerry added two goals for Calvert Hall and Joe McSorley posted 10 saves.
Timmy Kelly, an attackman, is a 2015 North Carolina signee. Jacob Kelly, a freshman also committed to UNC, is his cousin and the son of the Calvert Hall coach, Bryan Kelly.
Timmy Kelly described the tying goal:
“Our offensive coordinator pulled us in and said, ‘Timmy, you’re going to the goal,'” said Timmy Kelly. “I was like, ‘Coach, if I come around the goal Jacob is going to be wide open.’ I went out dodged off, sure enough the guy started sliding toward me and I threw it backside to Jacob and I had faith he was going to finish it.
“I have got to credit the team. I had probably one of the worst first halves an attackman has had here in a while, I had no points, I turned it over a few times, and shot terribly. Then luckily the defense pulled us up, the offense was terrible and that started with. Luckily, we were able to stick it out in the second half.”
Despite the loss, Malvern 2016 goalie Sam Stroud was brilliant with 18 saves.
“That goalie was ridiculous,” said Timmy Kelly. “We shot terribly and he made us look even worse; he was killing us.”
Jacob Kelly said the atmosphere and excitement of the game helped to lift his team.
“This is a confidence builder,” he said. “It feels good to get that goal and win over this team. It was definitely crazy under the lights. The defense stepped up.”
Adam Goldner (three assists), Billy Coyle, Drew Schantz and Scott White each scored two goals to lead Malvern Prep, which went 24-0 last year and is ranked 11th in the Epoch Lacrosse North America Rankings. Mike Fay (one assist) and Luke Hoffman also scored and 2015 face-off specialist Charles Kelly (UNC) won 20 of 25 face-offs.
“It’s a great experience to play a team at this level in the MIAA,” said Goldner. “But our actions now are going to help define our season.
“Especially, coming off an undefeated season, we need to take this loss and learn from it,not dwell on it for too long and just get ready for the next game.”
