BALTIMORE – Boys’ Latin junior attackman Logan Wisnauskas had four goals to help the Lakers defeat McDonogh 11-8 Friday in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association boys’ lacrosse.
Two of Wisnauskas’ tallies came in the fourth quarter, one to break an 8-8 tie and the other was icing on the cake to give Boys’ Latin (9-2, ranked 11th by Epoch Lacrosse) its first MIAA conference win.
McDonogh (7-3, 1-1, ranked 6th) grabbed the momentum late in the third quarter when Barrett Sutley scored back-to-back goals with under 30 seconds left to bring the Eagles even. But The Lakers weren’t fazed as Wisnauskas and senior attackman Patrick Spencer (one goal, one assist) protected their home turf and sealed the victory.
“Going into the fourth quarter we knew we had to get Patrick Spencer involved,” said Wisnauskas, a Syracuse commit who also had an assist. “We got Pat involved, started moving the ball and started sharing it opened up some shooters and got the win.”
The Lakers battled and never allowed McDonogh have their way with them. Several times during the contest Boys’ Latin got two-goal lead but the Eagles found a way to tie it up.
Devin Shewell had two goals and two assists while sophomore Greg Ey had a two-goal game for the Lakers. Jack Pezzulla made 10 saves.
“We are skilled enough offensively that if you keep giving us possessions – which the faceoff guys did – we can get some quality shots,” said BL coach Bob Shriver. “That was a heck of a high school lacrosse game.”
Robert Clark had three goals and an assist for McDonogh.
“Their goalie was really strong today and any opportunities we got he was up to the challenge,” said McDonogh coach Andy Hilgartner. “We didn’t value the ball today; we showed a side of ourselves that we haven’t shown for a while.
“It’s a disappointing loss. It’s up to us to try and learn from it and move on.”
Wisnauskas said the Lakers were able to rebound from a one-goal loss to Calvert Hall.
“Coming off the loss we were really down about it, but we stuck to the game plan,” he said. “Huge shoutout to Jack Pezzula – he played phenomenal and stood on his head in the goal.”
