HAVERFORD, Pa. – A.J. Witherell scored four goals and Salesianum School (DE) used a 6-0 second-half run to key a 14-8 victory today over Bronxville (N.Y) in the 7th Annual Nike Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational.

Michael Drake delivered three goals and six assists for the Sals (5-2) in one of four games played at Haverford School.

Henry Grass scored a game-high six goals for the Broncos (4-1), the defending New York Class C champions, who did not score in the second half. R.J. Ambrose and Ted Forst also scored.

Garrett Cannon and Sam Fink each finished with three goals for Salesianum. Cannon scored twice early in the third quarter to snap an 8-8 tie.

Consecutive scores by Witherell extended the lead to a commanding 10-8. Goalkeeper Ryan Kern recorded 10 saves.

“I thought we played very well offensively all day,” head coach Bob Healy said. “We moved the ball well. We played very unselfishly. We were able to make some adjustments.”

Witherell said the Sals utilized a stellar defensive effort in the second half against Johns Hopkins signee Grass, who Healy called one of the top offensive players in the country.

“At halftime, (Healy) challenged our defense to contain Grass,” Witherell said. “They did a stellar job. They really stepped up.”

Witherell cited the performance of Michael Sanzone, a senior midfielder, for his work in defending Grass.

According to the senior attacker, Salesianum caught Bronxville in transition in the third quarter.

“Our defense gave us a real spark,” Witherell said.

According to Broncos head coach Tim Horgan, Salesianum’s players outworked his team in the second half.

“They wanted it more,” Hogan said. “They won most of the ground balls, and they did a great job shutting down Henry. We needed someone else to step up.”
