ANNAPOLIS, Md. – St. Paul’s senior attackman Alex McGovern scored a late fourth quarter goal to push the Crusaders to an 8-7 win over St. Mary’s Annapolis on Tuesday in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association boys’ lacrosse action.
McGovern finished with four goals and an assist as St. Paul’s improved to 2-1 in the MIAA conference and 8-4 overall and dealt the Saints (5-4, 2-1) their first league loss.
St. Mary’s never led in the contest, but managed to tie the game several times. Senior Timmy Hardy made it 6-6 to open the second half but then Joe Pollard was fed a nice pass from sophomore middie Jennings Schweizer to give St. Paul’s the lead.
In the fourth Jack Andrews tied it again for St. Mary’s but McGovern delivered the final blow.
Coach Rick Brocato said afterwards that it was another “gut check” type of game. “I think it is an important game for us in building confidence and moving forward. We are on the road twice this week. So it’s the next one, we will celebrate this on the way home and then get ready for Calvert Hall (on Friday).”
The Crusaders had to rise up and play without junior attackman Mitch Gordon, who was out with concussion-like symptoms. “It was real great, everyone was moving around, everybody was contributing today,” said McGovern. “We had Mitch go down yesterday with his concussion symptoms so Keegan Pearl stepped up today and played great and moved the ball around.”
Jake Carraway stepped up for the Saints with two goals and face-off specialist Alex Woodall went 13-of-19 from the X.
Joe Pollard had a hat trick for the Crusaders and AJ Barretto made 13 saves.
“AJ was great today he came up big with so many saves,” said McGovern. “At the end he stopped them from scoring the tying goal to bring us to overtime. And he is always making those clutch saves and bailing us out.”
