From US Lacrosse
Top-seeded Yellow Jackets Blue (N.Y.) wanted to sting quickly in the girls’ gold medal game of the US Lacrosse U15 National Championships against Long Island rival and second-seeded Top Guns 2018 (N.Y.), and did it ever.
Attacker Jennifer Medjid score three of her game-high four goals in the first 4:25, and these class of 2018 Jackets, silver medalists a year ago, saw their quest for the gold through with an 11-3 win at the River City Sportsplex today in nMidlothian, Va.
The offensive explosion cemented a spot on the Lacrosse Magazine All-Tournament Team (below) for Medjid, who has given a verbal commitment to Boston College, and it secured a second consecutive and fourth overall national title for the Yellow Jackets.
“This feels so great to get the gold medal,” said Yellow Jackets Blue midfielder Hannah Dorney, who added a goal and two assists in the final and likewise earned all-tournament honors. “Our motto was ‘refuse to lose.’”
Medjid scored on successive assists from Taylyn Stadler, Madison Sanchez and Dorney as Yellow Jackets Blue dissected a previously stout Top Guns 2018 defense. And though all-tournament honorees Anna Kaufmann and Erin Tierney eventually settled the Guns’ defense enough to preserve a 5-1 halftime deficit, Top Guns 2018 struggled to gain possession and solve future Florida goalie Sarah Reznick (three saves).
Yellow Jackets Blue again struck quickly in the second half, as Dorney fed Meaghan Tyrell just 90 seconds in and Sanchez scored unassisted at 16:10. Shannon Maroney played goalie in the second half for Yellow Jackets Blue, stopping four shots as her squad ground out the 11-3 win. Nicollete LaVista scored twice for Top Guns 2018.
“We wanted to get a quick jump on them,” said Yellow Jackets coach Carol Rainson Rose. “You get a few quick goals and you can really build confidence from there.”
Rose, the head coach at Northport (N.Y.) High, has presided over each of the Yellow Jackets’ four national championships. And for the second straight year, her program claimed multiple medals, as Yellow Jackets White hung on for a 9-7 win over Sky Walkers 2018 (Md.) in the third-place game.
“The best part is seeing their faces; they just love to be together,” Rose said. “They’re good kids, and they work very hard.”
Hard enough, and fast enough, to be national champions, again.

Caroline DeBellis and Jennifer Barry scored two goals each in the first half as Yellow Jackets White (N.Y.) jumped out to a 6-2 halftime lead and hung on for a 9-7 win over Sky Walkers 2018 (Md.) to win the bronze medal. Goalie Claire Morris nearly shut out the Marylanders in the opening frame, but Tayler Warehime and Julia Henry each scored with less than a minute left to set the stage for Sky Walkers’ comeback. That was fueled by a hat trick from all-tournament honoree Elizabeth Hillman, whose last goal at 3:50 provided the final margin.
Notes
In the Top Guns 2018-Yellow Jackets White semifinal, defender Erin Tierney came up with a big caused turnover at the 1:45 mark, and the Top Guns were successfully able to play keep away against YJ White’s double-teaming for the 6-5 win. Olivia Carner scored twice for YJ White, which led 4-3 at the half. Kate Mulham scored three for Top Guns 2018, and Shannon Brazier scored the game-winner with 3:16 to play.
In the other semifinal, Yellow Jackets Blue used a hat trick by Madison Rielly to neutralize that of Sky Walker Caitlynn Mossman and salt away the 8-5 win. YJ Blue controlled the clock for much of the second half to limit Sky Walker chances, and goalie Sarah Reznick finished with four saves.
Washington won the event’s sportsmanship award.
