Laura Murphy scored with just over a minute to play to give Darien (CT) a 9-8 win over West Islip Saturday in the its third straight road game on Saturday 2nd Annual Gains For Brains Lax Showcase at Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.
Darien, ranked 17th in the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings and No. 1 in new England by TopLaxRecruits.com, improves to 5-1. West Islip falls to 5-2.
Katie Cronin had a hat trick for the Wave and Kaeleigh Morrill scored twice, while Emma Lesko, Chandler Kirby, Emma Jaques tallied one goal each.
Carly Schoudel had 12 saves.
Middle Country (NY) 13, New Canaan (CT) 10
Rachel Masullo had six goals and an assist and Ava Barry scored four goals while Jamie Ortega added a goal and five assists to lead Middle Country (6-1).
For New Canaan (6-1), Campbell Armstrong had two goals and three assists, and Karlie Bucci scored three goals while Sami Stewart added two goals.
Eighteen of the top-ranked girls’ teams in the country from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut competed Saturday in the event that raises money to benefit the Making Headway Foundation, which is dedicated to the care and comfort of children with brain and spinal cord tumors. The event was founded by MSG Varsity’s Andrew (Raff) Rappaport, who wanted to create a fun way to raise money for a needy cause.
Last year the tourney featured six games; this year’s was increased to 9 games on two fields. An amazing 15 of the 18 teams were ranked in the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings or listed as under consideration.
There was no admission, but donations were taken and spectators were able to buy warm-up t-shirts and baked goods in a massive bake sale.
