COLD SPRING HARBOR, N.Y. – Nikki Sliwak tallied six goals and two assists leading Wantagh to a 12-8 victory over Ridgewood Saturday at the Gains For Brains tournament held at Cold Spring Harbor.

The Warriors improved to 8-1 while Ridgewood – No. 10 in the STEPS Lacrosse Rankings – fell to 5-1.

The game was one of nine Saturday as 18 of the top-ranked girls’ teams in the country from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut competed in an event that raises money to benefit the Making Headway Foundation, which is dedicated to the care and comfort of children with brain and spinal cord tumors. The event was founded by MSG Varsity’s Andrew (Raff) Rappaport.

“I think this was a really great win for us,” said Sliwak. “Ridgewood is a great team. To get this win and play a whole team effort, it was a really big win for us.

“It is unbelievable playing for this tournament. We wanted to be a part of this last year. To be able to play in it and win in it, we are playing for all those people today to help out this cause. It is great.”

Wantagh used a 4-0 spurt in the first half to take a 5-1 lead. Ridgewood never got closer than three goals.

Megan Gordon tallied two goals and four assists and Madison Conway tallied one goal and three assists for Wantagh.

“I think it is great playing in this tournament,” said Wantagh head coach Jaclyn Steven. “We didn’t actually get to get in last year and we were definitely pushing to get in it this year. It is for a great cause.

“The girls have letters written on their legs for a family friend, putting more meaning into the game and the win for us. This is a huge win for us. Four games in six days and we came out real strong.”

Katie Bourque and Alex Absey tallied two goals each for Ridgewood.

“We heard about this tournament and I know that is a nice charity so the parents really worked hard to get us to come to this,” said Ridgewood head coach Karla Mixon. “Andrew wanted us to get in and I was very happy to get in.

“I think this is a great opportunity for all of us to be able to give back to the organization. Our girls did some fundraising to raise some money to contribute to the event. This is an opportunity for the girls to play against a New York team. I’m very proud of them and proud of the way they played.”
