RADNOR, Pa. – Brunswick School (CT) made its third and final trip to Philly a successful one.

Vermont signee Cameron Stafford scored his fourth goal of the game with 1:02 to play in overtime, lifting the Bruins to a thrilling 7-6 win over Episcopal Academy (PA) Saturday in the 14th Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival.
The one-day event, which featured 27 high school games on six fields, raises money for spinal cord research in the name of Katie Samson, a former Radnor High and Middlebury College great who suffered a spinal cord injury while sledding 15 years ago and became a quadriplegic. Samson continues to live a full life and competes in many adaptive sports; she was present at the event and gave an emotional speech midway through the games.
Brunswick already came to Philly twice this year, falling to Haverford School, 9-5, in its opener and then winning at Haverford’s Checking for Cancer invite, 6-5 over St. Augustine Prep (N.J.), two weeks ago.
In overtime, EA had possession most of the time after Christian Feliziani won the face-off, but Brunswick held and called time out before getting the ball to its standout attackman.
“The whole game was a battle; every quarter was even,” said Stafford. “Then in overtime our ‘D’ came up big and we got the ball in the offensive zone and we put it away.
“We decided to keep calm and get the final shot. I had an opening and got the feed and scored.”
Curtis Zappala (two goals) helped stake EA (4-10 against a national schedule, four OT losses) take a 4-2 halftime lead. Brunswick later scored to tie it, 6-6, on a tally by Jack Knight. Marshall Dickson and Reilly Walsh also scored for the Bruins, who have won seven straight.
Malvern Prep (PA) 7, St. Augustine Prep (NJ) 6
Sophomore AJ Traynor scored the game-winner with 4:30 to play as the Friars remained perfect at 16-0 by rallying past St. Augustine Prep (N.J.).
The Friars – No. 7 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits Rankings – improved to 16-0 and won their sixth game by one goal. The Hermits fell to 7-5.

St. Augustine led, 6-4, after a goal by Jared Chiachetti with 2:10 to play in the third period. But Kyle Anderson made it 6-5 late in the stanza off a feed from fellow sophomore Adam Goldner (one gola, three assists) and Goldner tied it off a pass from Sparky Hilburn (one goal, two assists) with 6:36 to play.
“We definitely have big target on our backs as the season goes along,” said Goldner. “With the undefeated season, It gets bigger and we have won some close games.”
Malvern Prep ended a week which saw it defeat Haverford School, 8-7, in overtime and take over sole possession of first place in the Inter-Ac League.
“We just have to stay focused and stay humble,” said Goldner. “We need to keep treating the season one game at a time and not worry about next week or two weeks after that – we just want to worry about the next game.”
Dean DeSimone led the Hermits with two goals and an assist and goalie Ernie Alvino had nine saves.
Conestoga (PA) 10, La Salle (PA) 8
Jack Robbins had four goals and an assist and Jake Scott scored three goals as the Pioneers (9-3) won their fifth straight game in a special rivalry game.
Conestoga and La Salle have met in the state finals five of the six years Pennsylvania has sanctioned the PIAA tourney. Last year La Salle won its second title over the Pioneers.
Mitch Soufleris had three goals for the Explorers (6-5).
Haverford School (PA) 17, Lawrenceville School (NJ) 11
Senior defenseman/LSM Connor Keating scored three goals as the No. 10 Fords improved to 13-4.
Grant Ament had three goals and an assist, Dox Aitken and Shane McBride each scored twice and Brandon Shima had a goal and three assists for Haverford School. Reilly Hupfeldt – who helped the Fords win the Inter-Ac Invitational crown last year – had four goals as a PG for the Big Red (5-6).
Emmaus (PA) 13, Strath Haven (PA) 8
Nick Tonno and Zack Bernhard each had three goals and an assist as the Hornets defeated the Panthers, coached by former Emmaus coach Jef Hewlings.
Jack Borbee scored a season-high four goals for the Panthers.
Girls
Harriton (PA) 6, Episcopal Academy (PA) 5
Melina Avery (Syracuse signee), in her first full game back after missing several weeks due to a head injury, made five saves and Katie Melvin and Maura Henderson each had two goals while Sabrina Tabasso had a goal and three assists. Harriton is 9-4.
Lily Crager had two goals for EA (10-3).
Radnor (PA) 17, Merion Mercy (PA) 7
EEmily Games tallied five goals, Sara Curley added four goals and two assists and Hannah Proctor had three goals and an assist for the Raiders (11-3).
Caroline Corzel had three goals and an assist for Merion Mercy (8-2).
Alex Freedman, a goalie for Radnor who posted three saves in one half of play, was named the winner of the Katie Samson Inspiration Award for overcoming obstacles.
