PIAA girls’ semifinals: No. 15 Harriton to play league rival Radnor for state title

EXETER, Pa. – Senior standout Caleigh Foust had one opinion after helping Harriton to a 15-8 victory over District 3 champion Manheim Township in a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament semifinal game at Exeter Township High Tuesday night.

“I didn’t do anything,” said Foust, one of only two seniors in the Rams’ lineup.

Her coach, George Dick, thought otherwise.

“It’s called filling up the scoresheet,” Dick said, pointing to Foust’s two goals, one assist and six caused turnovers.

Foust and defender Alison Tepper will be the only 12th graders taking the field at noon Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium, where the District 1 champion Rams (24-2), ranked No. 15 by TopLaxRecruits.com. will take on Central League rival Radnor in the state championship game.

Radnor won the first two PIAA titles (2009 by beating Strath Haven, and 2010 with a win over Springfield-Delco). Harriton, which advanced to the state semifinal round for the first time, will be going after its first PIAA crown.

“The other players have been saying all along that they wanted to do this for the seniors,” Foust said. “Now we have that chance to play one more game. And it’s nice to be playing a team we know so well like Radnor.”

While Foust was drawing plenty of attention from Manheim Township’s defense, junior Katie Melvin and sophomore Jane Henderson were pulling the load on attack for Harriton, which is playing the state tournament without high-scoring junior Sabrina Tabasso (broken foot).

Melvin scored seven goals against the Blue Streaks (22-5), scoring on the Rams’ first shot and finishing the first half with five goals. Henderson got her team’s first three goals of the second half, a half in which Harriton limited Manheim Township to a pair of goals as Foust, Tepper, Alexa Foust, Jessica Herman, Maura Henderson and Hilary Lemonick were strong defensively in front of goalie Melina Avery (nine saves).

“They had two outstanding players (Emily McBride, who finished with four goals, and Molly Hendrick, who got two goals), Caleigh Foust said. “Maura did a great job face-guarding (Hendrick), so they didn’t have other options.”

Many options was something Harriton had with Melvin and Jane Henderson working their magic on attack, especially after Manheim Township scored three goals while the Rams were a player short because of a yellow card. When the teams got back even, Harriton scored three of the last four goals of the first half.

Caleigh Foust added a goal in each half and set up one of Melvin’s scores in addition to her defensive work.

“This was one of the best games we played all year,” Melvin said. “They came back on us a little, but this time we picked ourselves up. We know most of us will be back next year, but this is our one shot for Caleigh and Tepper.”

Jane Henderson recalled the cold days of winter when practice began as well as the intense heat and humidity of last week’s quarterfinal win over Kennard-Dale.

“All season our goal was June 8,” she said, of the date of the state final. “It seemed like it was so far away when we started, but now it’s here. “

“We came to play today,” Dick said. “It’s hard to beat us when our transition game is on like it was. And Melina made some big stops. It was another one of those team efforts.”

MECHANICSBURG – Sophomore Reilly Masterson exploded for a career-high seven goals on seven shots to go with two assists and Shannon Quinn paired six goals with one assist as the Red Raiders throttled the Indians in the PIAA semifinals at Cumberland Valley High School.

The No. 3 seed out of District 1, Radnor (20-4) will take on District 1 champion Harriton in Saturday’s state final at noon at Hersheypark Stadium. The Rams toppled Manheim Township, 15-8, in the other semifinal to set up the fourth all-Central final in five years.

Harriton took home a 10-9 win over the Red Raiders in the teams’ regular-season meeting and followed it up with a 15-6 rout in the District One semifinals.

“It’s really great, (especially) considering it’s my first year on varsity and it’s nice to contribute to the team,” Masterson said. “It’s amazing (to make it to Hershey). It’s so fun and we’ve worked so hard like in fall ball and all of our offseason work to get here. It’s just amazing.”

The Red Raiders looked well on their way to a rout as they opened up a 9-0 lead, but the District 7 champion Indians (19-3) weren’t about to go down lightly. They strung together a 9-3 run that left them down 12-9, a streak that featured a natural hat trick from Allison Hurley, but then Masterson and Quinn tallied the game’s final seven goals to slam the door shut.

“I got so many texts and emails from alumni parents today saying, ‘we’re going to be in Hershey. You’ve gotta get there. You’ve gotta get there. It made me nervous. It put extra pressure on me, especially since today was such an unknown. (The Indians) had some nice players.”

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Conestoga boys’ lacrosse team outscored Avon Grove, 12-1, in a stunning run that carried the Pioneers to a 13-4 victory over the Red Devils today in the PIAA semifinals at Henderson High.

The win vaulted the three-time defending state champion Pioneers (15-10) into the PIAA championship game vs. La Salle Saturday (2:30 p.m.) at Hersheypark Stadium.

Conestoga, the fourth-place team from District 1, has advanced to the PIAA finals for the fifth time in the five-year existence of the tourney. The Pioneers have played La Salle three times, defeating the Explorers in 2010 and 2012 while falling to the Explorers in 2009.

Sam Friedman led the Pioneers with three goals while Pierre Atkinson and Jake Scott each scored a pair of goals. Zach Schleicher had a goal and three assists, while Connor Ashton and Alex Mezey each had a goal and two assists.

La Salle was leading North Allegheny, the District 7 runner-up, 9-1 after one half of their game at Cumberland Valley.

Avon Grove, the District 1 champion, finished at 21-4.

Friedman gave the Pioneers their first lead of the day to close out the first half, capping a 3-0 run to end the period.

“We’ve really just been jelling as a team throughout the season,” Friedman said. “Some of our losses have made us come together, I think a little more on offense and really made us focus.”

Ashton connected with Friedman for his third goal to put the Pioneers up by two, 6-4, early in the second half. The Pioneers eventually scored nine straight goals to end the game.

Goalie Rob Zonino (10 saves) was instrumental in keeping his team in the game early, and the majority of his saves came in the first half when the offense was struggling to get possession.

“I definitely felt that in that moment it was kind of my time,” Zonino said. “That being a Senior and a captain I really had to step up and I had to shut these kids down so my offense could get going.”

Avon Grove’s Anthony Cardile was 11 of 20 on faceoffs. But the Red Devils struggled to hold onto the ball in the second half.

“I think we might have gotten the initial possession,” Avon Grove head coach Eric Jackson said. “But they swarmed the ball very well and there’s one thing in the stat book of winning faceoffs and there’s a whole other thing of keeping possession.”

Conestoga dominated possession in the final two quarters by forcing turnovers and picking up key ground balls.

“[Going back to the finals] means the word to us,” Jake Scott said. “We look forward to this every year. This is our goal at the beginning of the season to get to the state championship and we base every practice off getting here.”

La Salle 14, North Allegheny 1

MECHANICSBURG – It’s been nearly a full calendar year since La Salle lost to Conestoga in the 2012 PIAA championship game, but the replay of that game still holds a special spot in Sean Coleman’s house.

It’s been saved on the Coleman DVR and occasionally the star Explorers midfielder will watch the replay. He’s not a fan, though.

“I didn’t personally have a really good game (against Conestoga),” said Coleman, who had two goals and three assists in La Salle’s 14-1 thrashing of North Allegheny in Tuesday’s PIAA semifinal at Cumberland Valley High. “It just fuels the fire. I know I’m going to watch it before this game.”

“This game” is another crack at the Pioneers, this time with the roles reversed heading into play. A year ago, it was senior-laden Conestoga taking out underdog La Salle, 10-7, for its third straight state title. Fast forward a year later and the Explorers (22-2), ranked No. 10 by TopLaxRecruits.com, will go into action as the favorites Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium at 2:30 p.m.

“That’s going to be the main factor,” said defenseman Stefan Bergman, who led the usual dominant effort from the La Salle defense. “You’ve got 19 or however many juniors last year that played in the game, we all remember what it was like to leave Hershey empty-handed. We’re definitely back to get it this year.”

They played like it against the Tigers (13-8), rolling out to leads of 4-0 and 9-1 after the first and second quarters, respectively. North Allegheny, like the rest of the state, had no answers for the lethal combination of Coleman and star attackman Matt Rambo. Rambo tallied five times in limited minutes, which was plenty of ammunition for an Explorers team that has outscored opponents 23-2 in the first halves of the state tournament.

Brian McNamara scored twice and set up another for La Salle, while Aidan Kerrigan tallied twice. Explorers coach Bill Leahy, fresh off his 400th career win last round against Garnet Valley, rolled out three goalies for No. 401. Nick Hreshko (five saves), Colin MacDougall (six saves) and Conor Scafidi (three saves) did the honors in net as Leahy substituted liberally.

Against Conestoga, which avenged a loss to Avon Grove in the District 1 tournament by handling the Red Devils, 13-4, La Salle will have plenty of motivation against a familiar foe. This will be the fourth time in five years that the two teams face other for state supremacy and the Pioneers hold a 2-1 edge in that series. The Explorers’ seniors would love nothing more than to even that margin up.

“We felt like we could beat them last year with all of our juniors against their seniors, so we’re going to come back this season” Bergman said. “We played them well during the season (a 13-5 win), so we feel like we match up well but it doesn’t mean anything.

“We saw that against Radnor, too. We saw them in the regular season and it was a blowout and they came right back and we won 6-4. We’re going to approach it like every other game and work hard and try to come out on top.”

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- Reserve Dale Stasco scored his only goal with two seconds left to play as Garden City claimed a thrilling 10-9 victory today over undefeated Niskayuna in a New York State Class B boys’ lacrosse semifinal game at Marist College.

The win vaults the defending state champion Trojans (18-3) into Saturday’s title game vs. Jamesville-DeWitt Saturday at St. John Fisher College in Rochester at 11 a.m.

Garden City is the defending national champion, but entered play ranked No. 19 by TopLaxRecruits.com. Niskayuna (21-1) was ranked No. 2 and was averaging 17 goals a game.

Cody George assisted on the game-winner by Stasco, a goal that came after Garden City took over possession with just over two minutes remaining and held the ball. The Trojans ran a play after calling time out with 11 seconds left as Justin Guterding (two goals, four assists) ran behind the cage and passed to George who then fed Stasco.

Justin Guterding led the Garden City attack with two goals and four assists while Cody George had three goals and the assist on Stasco’s game-winner. Jack Worstell had two goals and Dan Dolan made seven saves in goal for the Trojans.

Niskayuna got four goals from Michael D’Amario and three goals and two assists from Luke Goldstock.

Garden City fell to Jamesville-DeWitt (20-1, ranked No. 11) in the 2011 state title game, 8-7 in overtime, and also, 11-5, in the 2010 state finals.

LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Carly Demato scored off a Caroline Shinske feed with 1:16 left in the first overtime period today as Shawnee defeated Summit, 13-12, in a thrilling New Jersey Tournament of Champions semifinal at Monmouth University.

The win vaults the Group 4 champion Renegades (19-2) into the first T of C final Saturday (at Kean University, 7:30 p.m.) vs. today’s Moorestown-Oak Knoll winner.

Shawnee’s Shannon Nugent was a standout with five goals, including the game-tying tally from Demato with 1:57 to play. Nugent also had given her team a short-lived 11-10 lead with 6:40 to play after the Renegades had killed off a two-minute man-down situation.

After that goal, Summit (18-5) freshman Sara Syznal (four goals) tied it with 3:40 to play and Stephanie Ford scored off a Shawnee turnover with 2:24 left in regulation.

After Demato’s game-winner, Summit committed a penalty off a botched free position and the renegades were a man up for most of the second 3-minute overtime period.

“After it happened I thought, ‘Dear God, I hope that’s it,’” said Demato about the game-winning goal. “When they got that penalty I thought if we just got the draw we’d have it.”

Added Nugent: “Literally, I was the best feeling we ever had. It was a beautiful play and a great pass by Shinske.

“Our thoughts (on overtime) were basically, ‘It’s 0-0 and we only have six minutes to go so we need to go as hard as we can and leave it all on the field.’”

Erin Smith added three goals for Shawnee while Shinske and Demato each had two goals and three assists. Lily Argyle had nine saves.

Kady Glynn was strong for Summit (Group 2 champion) in goal with 12 saves and Stuart Humphrey had four goals.

Nugent is excited to get the chance to play Moorestown – which toppled Shawnee 8-4 in their meeting a month ago – in the state finals. She noted that she and others from Shawnee play club lacrosse with many of the Moorestown players.

“It’s such a great rivalry between both of us,” she said. “We saw them early in the season and we are so excited to get the chance to play them again.”

“We want Moorestown,” added Demato. “We want the rematch. This is what we worked for. When we lost to them we knew this (state finals) was the only way we were going to get them again.

“I am great friends with some of them and I am going to their graduation party. I have been playing with them for five years. But when we step on the field we are Shawnee and they are Moorestown.”

Moorestown led, 7-3, at halftime, and stretched the lead to 9-3 on goals by Dadino and Kierstyn Voiro (one goals, two assists) as the Group 1 champion Royals (17-6) never got closer than five goals as goalie Shannon Keeler (11 saves) was strong in goal.

POUGHKEEPSIE,N.Y. – Brewster Warble scored his only goal of the game in a man up situation in overtime, lifting Bronxville to a 14-13 victory over defending state champion Shoreham Wading River in a New York boys’ Class C semifinal Wednesday at Marist College.

Bronxville (22-1), the Section 1 champion, will play Cazenovia Central in the state finals Saturday at St. John Fisher College at 1:30 p.m. Cazenovia (21-2) advanced with an 8-7 triumph over Penn Yan.

“This is surreal,” said Warble, “We’ve been good in man up situations all year. We already scored off a few man ups in this game and I knew we would win when we went into man up in overtime. I was wide open in front of the cage and just shot it.”

Shoreham-Wading River (18-2) went up, 11-9, on a Daniel Hughes goal with 9:15 left in the game. But Bronxville pulled within 11-10 on Matt Behrens’ man-up goal and Jack Grass scored 40 seconds later to tie it.

The Wildcats answered on a Ryan Bray goal with 5:39 left, but Bronco freshman Reilly Walsh knotted it again with 4:11 left to play. Eighteen seconds later SWR was hit with a cross check penalty and Jack Grass found his brother Henry Grass for the fourth time in the game to give Bronxville the lead.

Shoreham answered at the two minute mark when Tim Rotanz fed Daniel Malave to tie it. In overtime, the Wildcats committed another penalty with 2:37 remaining. Reilly Walsh found Warble wide open in front of the cage for the closer.

Eric Pass was a standout in goal for Bronxville, making 18 saves, Henry Grass tallied four goals, Walsh collected three goals and two assists and Behrens scored three goals and one assist for Bronxville.

“Jack and I have played together for years,” said Henry Grass. “He always looks for me coming across the middle. We are always looking for each other and are able to connect a lot. This feels amazing. We are confident going forward to states. I’ve never been this excited.”

“We played a great team today,” added Bronxville head coach Tim Horgan. “We were able to capitalize on the man up today. We had four different guys score in man up.

Brewster Warble

“Our goalie played amazing. Without him between the pipes this is a different game. We worked hard all season and get to continue to play for one more game.”

Hunter Hayes and Bray each had three goals and one assist for SWR. Rotanz had four assists.

“Their goalie played amazing,” said Shoreham-Wading River head coach Tom Rotanz. “We kept trying to go high on him and it didn’t work.

“I would have liked to go low on him more because when we did we scored. This was a great team and a great opponent. I wish them luck going forward.”

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Jack Bruckner collected five goals and two assists, propelling No. 1 Ward Melville to a 13-6 victory over Shenendehowa Wednesday in the New York boys’ Class A lacrosse semifinals at Marist College.

Jack Bruckner

The Section 11 champion Patriots (21-0), ranked No. 1 by TopLaxRecruits and in all over national rankings, shoot for a mythical national title Saturday (4 p.m.) against West Genesee at St. John Fisher College in Rochester. West Genesee (15-5), the Section 3 champion, advanced with a 13-6 win over Penfield.

“It feels great to come out and execute what we have been practicing,” said Bruckner. “We were a little nervous at the start of this game. We settled down and noticed what we were doing wrong and put some in the back of the net and that really changed things up.

“We are feeling pretty positive after this win and we are going into the next game with a head of steam. Hopefully that works out.”

Ward Melville broke open a 4-4 game with a 6-0 run in the middle periods to take control. Daniel Bucaro had three goals and one assist, Brendan Hegarty tallied three goals and Christian Mazzone scored two goals and one assist for the Patriots.

“It wasn’t one of the better first quarters we played but from that point on we controlled the game,” said Ward Melville head coach Mike Hoppey. “I thought we started out a little bit slow, but I give them credit.

“They are a very good offensive team and it took us a little while to adjust. We have one more to go and it’s the biggest one. It’s been a great year so far and we hope to finish it off in style.”

Ben Robbins was a standout in goal for the Section 1 champion Plainsmen (18-4), making 16 saves. Brian Rogers tallied two goals and Kyle Marr scored one goal and one assist for Shenendehowa.

“Ward Melville is a heck of a team,” said Shenendehowa coach Jason Gifford. “They have a lot of athletes, a lot of speed and a lot of skills. We had our opportunities and they just didn’t fall for us tonight.”

New York girls Class A semifinals: Baldwinsville earns trip to finals with 9-8 win over Suffern

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sara Klaben scored with 4:28 to play to help Baldwinsville rally past Suffern, 9-8, today in the New York Class A girls’ lacrosse semifinals at SUNY-Cortland.

The Section 3 champion Bees (15-5) advance to play Section 8 champion Farmingdale, a 10-6 winner over Penfield, in the title game Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Baldwinsville had trailed, 8-6, after Alli Iodice scored with 11:02 to play for Section 1 champ Suffern (18-4).

But Amari Pollard (three goals) made it 8-7 just 25 seconds later and then tied it with 4:37 to play. Klaben (four goals) put the Bees ahead for good just 19 seconds later off a feed from Kennedy Frink (four assists).

“It’s what we do every game – stumble, fumble and make it close,” said Baldwinsville coach Doug Rowe. “But it’s another win, and that’s what counts.”

Naldwinsville will play in its first title game since winning the “Division I” title in 2000 (11-10 in OT vs. Suffern) and finishing second in 1999. Suffern was making its first semifinal appearance since losing to Baldwinsville in the 2000 “Division I” finals.

When we were down, we didn’t want it to be over,” Pollard said.

Added Klaben: “”The attackers did really well picking each other off and making space for us. It’s so exciting – the state finals.”

The championship game will match Baldwinsville with a powerful Farmingdale team (ranked No. 18 by TopLaxRecruits.com) that stung the Bees, 16-5, in the season’s first game.

“We really want to get redemption for the beginning of the season,” Klaben said. “Our team’s come so far since then. We’re not the same team at all.”

Suffern coach John Callanan said his team had its chances to win.

“At one point, I think we had a chance to sort of put them away, but we made some mistakes and Baldwinsville capitalized on it,” he said. “They got goals when they needed to and won draw controls when they needed.

“It hurts in that you know you’re that close.”

Farmingdale 10, Penfield 6

The 18th-ranked Dalers (15-3) scored three unanswered goals in the final nine minutes to pull away for the victory.

Bridget Weill scored four goals and Nadine Hadnagy had three goals and four assists while Amanda Turturro scored twice for Farmingdale.

Lindsay Gamer led Penfield (15-6) with three goals.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Brothers got moved up, but not out.

Christian Brothers Academy, moved from Class C up to Class B this year in girls lacrosse, is back in the state title game for a second time in three years.

The Brothers, now 18-2, got six goals from senior Marisa Romeo and outscored John Jay-Cross River, 17-13. CBA will play Brighton – which surprised Manhasset, 9-8, on a late goal by Kelzi VanAtta in the other semifinal – Saturday at noon for the championship.

With Romeo controlling the draws, CBA got off to a 7-1 lead in the first half. But the Indians from Section I came back to close to within three goals, at 10-7, after the first 25 minutes.

The Brothers pushed their lead back to seven, at 15-8, midway through the second half. But the Indians made another push and closed to within five, at 16-11, with 7:38 left in the game.

After losing in a state semifinal last year, the Brothers are back in the final. CBA won the state Class C title in 2011 with a 9-8 victory over Mt. Sinai.

Maddie Cook and Olivia Pitonzo each added three goals for CBA.

“We made every possession count,” said Pitonzo. “We were so ready (to play). We’ll be even more ready tomorrow.”

CBA coach Doug Sedgwick said losing last year in the Class C semifinal to Shoreham-Wading River (14-13) has been a motivator.

“It’s our driving force,” he said. “We’ve got seven seniors that have won the state championship before and seven seniors that have lost. They know what it’s like to lose and they don’t want to lose again.”

John Jay coach Christina Smith said her team never recovered from a 5-0 run by CBA to open the second half.

RADNOR, Pa. – A group of 75 players from around the state competed today in the inaugural Pride of Pennsylvania Lacrosse Showcase at Cabrini College.

La Salle’s Colin MacDougall

The event featured three teams competing in a tournament-style format. The players were chosen from two tryouts held in the state’s Central region and at The Hill School (East); from the games played today 25 will be picked to represent Pennsylvania at the Brine NLC July 1-3 at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md.

Nearly all of the players have not committed to play college lacrosse and are seeking added exposure and a chance to compete against other elite players. The Brine NLC, now in its sixth year, features teams from regions throughout the country.

In today’s championship game, Team Liberty scored three second-half goals to claim a 3-2 victory over Team Virtue. Rising senior Greg Farris (Southern Lehigh High, Lehigh University commit) tallied the game-winner and Liberty’s second-half goalie, La Salle rising senior Colin MacDougall made five saves.

“I think I have a good shot after today,” said MacDougall, who is hoping to play Division I lacrosse. “If I make it, I just want to keep playing my best and get the word out to coaches to see me play.”

MacDougall had to regain his focus after being part of La Salle’s 13-4 state championship victory Saturday over Conestoga at HersheyPark Stadium.

Nolan Ridgway

“I just came out to have fun,” he said. “I felt that I played well and saw the ball well.

“All my friends were going down to the beach, so that was kind of hard. But I came into this knowing I still had work to do. I had to buckle down one last time and play well today.”

The Pride Games, launched last year by the Brine NLC in Florida, have expanded this year to include Showcases in PA, as well as Ohio (held today), New England (Saturday) and Maryland (Thursday). The Pride of Florida Games were held Jun 1-2 and featured teams from four regions for boys and two for girls.

In the Pride Games, tryouts are held to choose two or more full teams in order to give evaluators a lot of time to select the top players for the region’s Brine NLC team. The Pride Games also have drawn colleges coaches seeking top recruits, so all players that make the Pride Games have been receiving more exposure.

The evaluators for the PA Pride Games chose the players from several hundred that came to the tryouts, without names attached to numbers. Again today, the final PA team was chosen by a large group of evaluators who picked players without knowing their names.

Parkland freshman midfielder Nolan Ridgway (team Virtue) enjoyed the format of the Games and was impressed by the competition.

“I liked the way they set it up because it was a good way to meet people you never played with in your life,” he said. “They were from all over PA and it was great to see who the best in the state were.

“The players were very good and it made me step it up and work a lot harder. You had players from Conestoga and big schools so that made everyone play harder.”

The Pennsylvania team will be coached by Hill School assistant Kacy Small (Team 380 Lacrosse head coach) and Central Region’s Doug Bailey (Elizabethtown assistant and former longtime Hempfield head coach). The final roster will be released in several days.
