New York boys’ state championship rewind: Garden City proves skeptics wrong with amazing Class B title run

Senior Justin Guterding said it only motivated him more when he heard the skeptics tell him that Garden City would not repeat as New York Class B champions in 2013 after a number of top players graduated from an undefeated team.

Garden City celebrates the New York Class B state championship

“We loved when people picked us to lose because – first off – it gave us motivation to prove them wrong,” he said. “Secondly, when people picked against us, it would help us to stay loose because the pressure was on the other team to win. We could relax and play well.”

And that they Trojans did. On Saturday at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, Garden City toppled Jamesville-DeWitt, 13-8, to claim its second straight state crown. The win capped a brilliant layoff run for the Trojans (19-3), who defeated the No. 2-ranked team in the TopLaxRecruits.com Rankings, Niskayuna, 10-9, in the semis before downing No. 11 JD.

Garden City stood only 7-3 after a 9-7 loss to Manhasset at the Woodstick Classic on April 27. The Trojans won their last 12 games – including a 10-4 rout of Manhasset in the Nassau County finals.

“I think after the early losses, everyone took a step back and watched film to see what we were doing wrong and what needed to be fixed,” said Guterding, who will prep one year at Salisbury School (CT) before heading to NCAA champion Duke. “The offensive problems were on me, and I will be the first person to tell you that.

“I was trying to do too much, but then when I realized that, I started becoming more dangerous because my passing game started to come into play a lot more and the other teams defense didn’t know what to do when we had other dangerous players on the offensive end (Cody George, Jack Worstell, Lucas Clay, Jack Metzler, etc.).”

In Saturday’s title-game win, Garden City scored the first five goals of the second half and tallied eight in all in the third quarter to break open a 3-3 game. George led the offense with five goals and an assist and Guterding had two goals and three assists while Worstell had two goals and two assists. The key to the win, though, was the face-off work of James Sullivan, who won 18 of 25 draws.

“Obviously, one main part of our big run during the third quarter was our special weapon, James Sullivan,” said Guterding. “He did an absolutely amazing job yesterday and we wouldn’t be where we were on Saturday if it wasn’t for him. He just completely took over the game and when we got what we wanted on offense and put the ball in the back of the net, we would get the ball right back on the next faceoff.

“Another huge part was the defense. When JD did get the ball, our defense was able to hold the high powered offense in check. I was really happy for James, who earned defensive MVP because he has worked so hard. I couldn’t think of a better kid to earn that award.”

Guterding said this title actually felt sweeter than last year’s. It also must be noted that in 2011 Jamesville-DeWitt went 22-0, closing the season with an 8-7 triumph over Garden City in the title game.

“This state title in fact feels a little better than last year mainly because of the fact that last year we were supposed to win the championship,” he said. “This year, people started doubting us the second that perfect season ended. We weren’t supposed to win counties, Long Islands, or even get to states.

“In the meantime, we used the people picking against us as motivation. I couldn’t be more proud of my team the way we handled ourselves after some losses that we felt we should have won.

“We made history for ourselves. First back to back state champions, and first state championship team in GC to win it all with three losses on the season.

“That’s pretty amazing and walking out of Garden City with four County titles, four Long Island Championship Titles, and four straight state championship appearances, winning the last two. I couldn’t think of a better way to end my career at Garden City.

“I am going to miss playing with my best friends and I want to give a special thanks to my coaches, family, and friends because I wouldn’t be the player and person I am without them all.”

New York girls’ championship rewind: Christian Brothers Academy rolls to state crown in first year in Class B

Staff Report

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Marisa Romeo and Taylor Poplawski combined for 10 goals Saturday when Christian Brothers Academy defeated brighton, 14-7, for the New York Class B girls’ state championship at SUNY-Cortland.

CBA celebrates the Class B championship

But CBA coach Doug Sedgwick said it was defense that stood out just as much as his two standouts.

“It’s the best I’ve had in nine years here of coaching,” Sedgwick said. “What that defense did out there was stifling.

“They won most of the draws; they just would come down into our defensive end and they couldn’t score.”

The title came for CBA (19-2) in its first year of play in Class B. The Brothers, who closed the year with 14 straight wins, had won the Class C crown in 2011.

Romeo had six goals and two assists and Poplawski (Tourney MVP) scored four times. Brighton (18-4) had shocked Long Island champion Manhasset (ranked No. 8 by TopLaxRecruits.com), 9-8, in the semifinals.

“Everybody was talking about how they (Brighton) beat Manhasset, and that they were going to cruise over CBA,” said Sedgwick. “And that’s enough motivation for anybody. All year long this team has produced.”

CBA built a 5-1 lead and was never threatened in the game.

“We all knew we had to work together if we wanted to bring home this championship,” said Poplawski. “It’s not just a one- or two-man team, it’s 24 strong.

“It feels so good. Especially for us seniors to go out with a bang. It’s nice.

“This was our main goal all the way,” added Romeo. “I can’t explain the feeling. Taylor was just out of her mind going to the cage. I knew they couldn’t stop her.”

Brighton is state runner-up for the fifth time; the Barons also finished second in Class B in 2006, 2008 and 2011 and in Div. I in 2004, and were state champs in Class B in 2005.

“We just seemed to throw the ball all over the place,” said Brighton coach Rich Curtis. “That’s not normal for us. It’s a game I haven’t seen all year from us.”

Class A
Farmingdale 8, Baldwinsville 5

Tourney MVP Nadine Hadnagy had three goals and an assist as the Dalers won their third state title since 2009.

Tara Waolf and Amanda Turturro each added two goals for Farmingdale and Olivia Kirk made three saves behind a strong defense.
The Dalers (16-3) had blitzed the Bees (15-6), 16-5, in their second game of the year. This game was close throughout, but Hadnagy scored twice to put her team up 6-4 early in the second half.

“We knew for sure they were going to be (better than first game),” said Farmingdale coach Shari Campbell. “We pride ourselves on our defense. I always say, offense will win games, but defense wins championships.”

Baldwinsville was led by Kennedy Frink, who had a goal and an assist.

“They were playing really smart on offense, moving the ball quickly,” Frink said. “It was making it tough for our defense to get the ball back.”

“They played really well,” added Baldwinsville middie Amari Pollard. “We improved so much, that there’s really nothing you can be upset about. It’s bittersweet.”

Class C
Mt. Sinai 15, Skaneateles 6

The fifth-ranked Mustangs used a 10-0 run to reverse a 3-0 deficit and close a perfect season at 20-0 for their first state title.

Shayna Pirreca and sister Sydney Pirreca each scored four goals while tourney MVP Caroline Fitzgerald and Danielle DellaRocca each tallied three for Mt, Sinai, which had defeated Honeoye Falls-Lima, 7-6, in overtime in the semifinals.

Mustangs coach Al Bertolone said he called timeout to calm down his Section VIII champions after the slow start.

“We just had to settle in a little bit,” he said. “We had to win a draw, get a goal, and then the floodgates opened.”

Skaneateles (19-3) is state runner-up for the fourth time; the Lakers were previously second in Class C in 2007 and 2008 and second in Div. II in 1996 (along with state Class C titles in 2005 and 2006).

Molly Wood had three goals for the Lakers.

“We had all of the momentum, but something clicked (for them) after that first time out,” Wood said.

Adrenaline Black Card Showcase is way to give back to lacrosse community, get exposure for players

LANCASTER, Pa. – Lincoln High (OR) rising junior defenseman Ben Paris flew into Pennsylvania at 5 a.m. this morning to compete in the Adrenaline Black Card Showcase.

David Parsons of the NH Tomahawks (right) defends Steven Shollenberger of MadLax at the Adrenaline Black Card Showcase Friday at Franklin & Marshall College

He finished the day very tired, but very happy with his performance.

“I just got off the plane this morning,” said Paris, a member of the West Coast Starz. “I had finals this week. I was little tired. It was brutal, but it’s summer now.”

Paris was one of 180 players selected by their National Scholastic Club Lacrosse Association (NSCLA) coaches to compete in a showcase that has quickly become a major event in the outset of the summer recruiting scene. More than 125 coaches attended the Showcase, which included players from the Classes of 2015 and 2016 that will play with their NSCLA teams in the Championship Cup Saturday and Sunday at F&M.

Ben Paris (West Coast Starz)

The event was created by Adrenaline as a way to give back to the lacrosse community. Players pay only $100 to compete and are given gear by sponsors Adrenaline, Cascade and Maverik. As one of the Adrenaline Awareness initiatives, all proceeds go to Prostate Cancer Research in the name of lacrosse icon Jack “Blackjack” McGetrick.

Players were put on teams for the day; each team played four games. Paris, playing on the Athlete’s Performance team, said the competition was keen.

“On the West Coast it’s athletes first, lacrosse players second,” he said. “Over here, there’s a lot of stick skills. You have to check your back as a d-pole and make sure no one gets behind you.”

Another member of the Athlete’s Performance squad (2015), Baltimore Crabs goalie Jacob Stover (McDonogh School), also said the talent was impressive.

“I’m having a great time out here,” said Stover. “We have a good group of teams and a good group of kids to play against. That it’s been only a year and a half for the Adrenaline Showcase, it’s really awesome. We have all these coaches here; it’s a great place to come in and get looks.

Jacob Stover (Baltimore Crabs)

“Just seeing different shots from a lot of kids was great. I am playing with a lot of Canadian kids this weekend. I am also getting the chance to communicate at this high level. It’s great being here an extra day as we get ready for (Saturday) and Sunday.”

Rory Doucette, the Vice President of Events for Adrenaline, said the goal is to do something special for the lacrosse community.

“It’s exciting,” said Duocette. “I think, honestly, it’s a shared vision for a lot of people with an a (common) goal. Cascade and Maverik and us, together, wanted to give back.

“Trust me, we’re not making money. We’re spending a lot, but it’s very much worth it to give back. A lot kids have come through our (club team) systems and through others. A lot of people who are on the same page want to see something genuine and pretty organic and this is it.

“We are happy to be a part of it and in the forefront of running it and growing it.”

Matt Schwartz, a Class of 2016 defenseman from Phillie Elite and Archbishop Wood High, said it was too easy to notice the coaches only yards away.

“It’s good competition,” he said. “It’s really tense with the coaches right on sideline. Picking up groundballs, you see them right there, and you are thinking, ‘Oh I gotta get there.’

Matt Schwartz (Phillie Elite)

“It’s fun. You have kids coming all the way down from Canada and out (West).”

Schwartz (Team GTF) said he has had to raise his game, but noted that it was easier because his team began to mesh quickly.

“My expectations have been surpassed,” he said. “The players have gone above and beyond. Kids are diving through the crease for goals and everybody is fighting for every inch and moving the ball really well. I thought that coming in and not knowing anybody, there would be no chemistry. But we have been coming together and really playing well.”

“There was a lot of talking. At first everyone was quiet because we didn’t know each other. But we have a great goalie (Phillip Goss of Laxachusetts) who is always talking. He has been calling good slides and we’ve been making crease adjacents. Everyone is laying out for hits, and laying out for the ball.”

One of Schwartz’s teammates, defenseman David Parsons of the New Hampshire Tomahawks (and Philips Exeter), agreed.

David Parsons

“The competition is amazing: there is talent all over the place,” he said. “I have been happy with my man-coverage; not many people have beaten me. I am happy with my clears.

“Coming into this, I heard the talent was going to be great. It’s met my expectations and exceeded them.”

BROOKLANDVILLE, Md. – The following is a rundown of 10 players that shined the past two days at the Champion Baltimore Summer Kickoff (Session 1) at St. Paul’s School.

1. Austin Holifield, A, Georgetown Prep 2014-15. Holifield has Division I stick work and footwork. The Little Hoyas attackman impressed with his dodging and shooting abilities. Very hard to defend.

2. Tim Golden, M, Georgetown Prep. Golden is a crafty middie with crisp stick work and great footwork. Excellent lacrosse I.Q. Should be someone to watch this summer on the recruiting camp circuit.

3. Ben Higgins, M, Breakers (MD) 2014.
Higgins had a monster game against the Georgetown Prep 2014-2015 team, with four goals. Higgins was all over the field. The Gerstell Academy rising senior has Division I talent.

4. Timothy Certeza, M, Greene Turtle (MD) 2016.
Certeza wowed the crowd with a laser shot on cage. The Calvert Hall rising sophomore has good skills and looks to be another great find for Bryan Kelly and Co.

5. Kyle Fiedler, A, Breakers (MD) 2014. Fiedler is talented attackman from North Carroll H.S. The rising senior moves well around the goal and distributes the ball well. Fiedler has a decent shot on cage and is left-handed.

6. Benjamin Randall, D, Cincy Royals 2014.
Randall moves the ball well up the field on clears. The rising senior makes nice checks and will be aggressive when going after a groundball. Benjamin is not afraid to run the ball up the field to the offensive end.

7. Benson Jernigan, LSM, Atlanta Rage/ Lambert H.S. Jernigan will run on the faceoff unit and is quick to get the groundball. The Lambert rising junior has a sweet canoe check. Jernigan is athletic.

8. Mitchel Snyder, M, Tar Heel Lacrosse club 2016.
Snyder has a nice shot on goal when on the run. He had a solid game against MIAA defenders on the Green Turtle team. The Broughton rising sophomore should be someone to watch this summer.

9. Keegan Teluk, Midfield/FO, Lax World (MD) 2014. Teluk in a morning game against Golden Gate was perfect from the faceoff line. The Fallston rising senior has a nice pinch and pull move on the face. Teluk also runs on the midfield line and is not just a FOGO.

10. Jace Buchek, D, Performance Elite (DC). Buchek is an aggressive long-pole out of Albert Einstein H.S. Jace has good technique and gets to ground balls. Someone to watch this summer.
