BOYDS, Md. – She is only a 2017 player, but Long Island’s Katie Kotowski has been competing in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic for four years.

Today Kotowski was recognized as the MVP of the inaugural Girls’ 2017 Division All-Star Game at the Maryland Soccerplex. Kotwowski, a starter this spring on Cold Spring Harbor’s Class C NY state runner-up team, had a goal and two assists for the White All-Stars in an 8-8 tie with the Red All-Stars.

Katie Kotowski

Katie Kotowski

Kotwoski’s father, Dave Kotowski, has been a Long Island coach at the Brine NLC the past three years, so she has much appreciation for a national tourney that drew 1,900 athletes this year.

“It’s such an exciting experience and so great that they do this,” said Kotowski, who played three years in the NLC Middle School Academy. “It’s my fourth year so it’s great to have that confidence coming in.”

Kotowski said it was a thrill to compete in the All-Star Game.

“It was so much fun – we don’t know each other but we do from different tournaments and Elite 120,” she said. “So it’s cool to interact with girls from other teams and to find out where they are from.

“It’s great to play with girls at the same level.”

Kotowski enjoys learning new skills from coaches with vast experiences. All Middle School Academy teams are coached by college coaches and the 2017 and high school teams have hand-picked coaches often with much high school experience.

“It’s really cool to experience different coaching staffs and use their past experiences,” Kotowski said. “My coach (for Long Island 2017) is Darby Berry, who played at Northwestern.

“It’s cool to have that top level lacrosse coach telling you all these things. And it’s great to see how far the (Brine NLC) program has come.”

Staff Report

BOYDS, Md. – Nine champions were crowned today at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic – including three outright champs and six co-champs – as inclement weather caused the cancellation of the final three title games shortly after their 2 p.m. starts at the Maryland Soccerplex.Brine NLC

Brine NLC officials were forced to call off the High School boys’ and girls’ and boys’ 2017 Division title games after a 40-minute delay. Maryland and Long Island shared the boys’ High School crown and Long Island shared the girls’ High School title with New Jersey, while Colorado and Maryland ar co-champions of the boys’ 2017 crown.

Earlier, Long Island defeated Maryland, 10-5, for the 2017 girls’ crown as Kelly George Garden City), Jillian Freeman (St. Anthony’s) and Rebecca Kinsley (Sacred Heart Academy) each had two goals and All-Star Game MVP Katie Kotowski (Cold Spring Harbor) had a goal and four assists.

In the Middle School Academy championships, Maryland downed Long Island, 10-2 as Isabelle Scane (Cranbrook Kingswood, MI), who was placed on the Maryland team since her region did not have a squad, had three goals. Erin Demek (Ellicott City, MD) had two goals and goalie Anastasia Dipeso (C. Milton Wright) had seven saves and did not yield a goal in the second half.

In the boys’ Middle School Academy final, Long Island pulled away from Texas with four goals to close out an 8-3 win. Nolen Rockefeller of St. Bernard’s School had two goals to lead the winners.

In years past the boys’ High School champion advances to the prestigious Brogden Cup against a Canadian All-Star team, but it was proposed that both Long Island and Maryland would be invited to participate in January’s Brogden Cup in Florida as part of a four-team round robin tourney with two Canadian teams.

We will have stories and details on all nine champions tomorrow.

BOYDS, Md. – The storm came just a little too early so the Brine National Lacrosse Classic made a positive out of a negative.

Maryland boys share Brine NLC HS championship

Maryland boys share Brine NLC HS championship

Thursday’s boys’ High School Division championship game between Maryland and Long Island was suspended after seven minutes of play and then canceled at the Maryland Soccerplex due to the approaching storm.

But Brine NLC officials proposed that the two co-champions will both represent the United States in January at the annual Brogden Cup, which typically pits the US champion against a Canadian All-Star team. Instead, the tourney will have two teams from each country in a round robin-style tourney.

That decision helped ease the disappointment for players on both teams that a true champion could not be decided.

Maryland's Riley Ford

“It will be fun; we’ll get to play them and the Canadian teams,” said Maryland’s Riley Ford, a 2015 midfielder from South River.

Ford’s team finished undefeated in the tourney and advanced to the finals by disposing of Florida, 9-2, in the quarterfinals Thursday and then downing Connecticut, 9-5.

“We had a great team, first of all, and we all had played together or against each other so we know what everybody does,” Ford said. “That kind of made it work.

“We have great coaches and we had two practices and all kind of figured out what everybody does.”

Long Island’s Zachary Merle, a 2015 defensemna/LSM committed to Lafayette who played at St. Anthony’s and will PG at Deerfield Academy (MA), said his team also meshed well. Long Island also went undefeated and won playoff games over Minnesota (9-3) and Rochester (8-3).

Long Island's Zachary Merle

“I think we just had the whole team buying into the system and nobody was selfish,” said Merle. “Everybody moved the ball around and we played off each other.

“That’s why we were able to keep beating teams. We all knew each other here and there, but nobody really knew each. I thought it was a great event; I am a little bummed we didn’t get to beat them (Baltimore) today, but it was fun.”

Girls – Long island, New Jersey share crown

The storm also cancelled the girls’ High School title game as Long Island and New Jersey shared the crown. Long Island went undefeated and advanced to the finals with an 12-4 win over Colorado and an 11-2 rout of Minnesota, while New Jersey edged Maryland, 8-7, and downed Pennsylvania, 10-6.

New Jersey got two goals each from 2016 attack Sharon Carroll (Watchung Hills) and 2015 midfielder Erika Keselman (Colds Neck) in the win over Pennsylvania and outscored PA, 6-2, in the second half.

“I think it was our team chemistry and speed,” said New Jersey’s Alexandra (Lexi) Finn, a 2015 defender from Morris Catholic. “We were such a fast team and could beat a girl up the field in an instant, but our team bonded and that helped immensely!

“I don’t know how we all got to know each other so well in such a short time, but we all just bonded so well! It looked like we have been playing together for months; you never would’ve guessed we only met that Monday.”

BOYDS, Md. – Kelly George suspected after her Long Island 2017 team’s first practice that it would be successful at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.

Long Island wins first 2017 Brine NLC championship

Long Island wins first 2017 Brine NLC championship

“A bunch of us play on teams together and we jelled together quickly, so after our first practice, we said, ’We can do this,’” she said.

George, an attack from Garden City, had two goals, while Jillian Freeman (St. Anthony’s) and Rebecca Kinsley (Sacred Heart Academy) each added two goals and Katie Kotowski (Cold Spring Harbor) had a goal and four assists as Long Island claimed the first 2017 girls’ title at the Brine NLC Thursday by downing Maryland, 10-5.

Long Island, which went undefeated, scored the game’s first seven goals and was never threatened.

Long Island's Kelly George

“Everyone knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses and we tried to make our strengths come out,” said George. “This is my third year in this tournament (first three in the Middle School Academy) and I loved it. It’s pretty much a tournament with kids your age and you get lots of looks.”

Katelyn Igneri (Syosset), Kennedy Slater (Sacred Heart Academy) and Mikayla Bergin (Harborfields) each added a goal for Long Island.

Maryland was led by Sarah Elms (Severna Park), who had three goals; Kassidy Bresnahan (South River) and Taylor Dodd (Loch Raven) each scored once.

2017 boys – Maryland and Colorado share title

Maryland and Colorado shared the championship when the looming storm ended the game as the teams had just begun playing the finale.

Maryland advanced to the title game with a tight 9-8 win over New England in the quarterfinals and a 7-4 triumph over New York in the semis. Colorado advanced with a 9-4 victory over Texas and a 12-4 win over Connecticut.

Colorado went 6-0 and made a huge statement for the region.

“We had a very talented group this year for starters, but what made us great was our athletes on defense and how well we moved the ball,” said Colorado defender Hunter Graefe (Chaparral, Johns Hopkins commit). “Our offense shared the ball and cooperated very well together.”

Arapahoe attackman Chase Douglas said, “It started with great D and goaltending. That allowed the offense to develop chemistry and momentum throughout the week.

“The more exposure we get in high profile tournaments like Brine National, the more it will help people realize the wealth of Lacrosse talent Colorado has to offer.”

BOYDS, Md. – Isabelle Scane figured she must have been dreaming when they told her that she and another Michigan 2018 player would be placed on the Maryland Middle School Academy team in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.

Maryland wins Middle School Academy title

Scane (rising freshman at Cranbrook High) scored three goals Thursday and along with fellow Wolverine Kelleigh Keating (Academy of Sacred Heart) were welcome contributors to Maryland’s 11-2 victory over Long Island in the title game at the Maryland Soccerplex.

“We tried out for the Michigan High School team and made it but they wanted us to be in the (Middle School Academy) so they placed us on the Maryland team,” said Scane. “The (Maryland) girls are so nice and obviously they are amazing players. We had a lot of fun.”

Long Island had beaten Maryland, 9-7, in a non-pool game earlier in the 3-day tournament. But in the finals, Maryland dominated the draws and outscored Long Island, 7-0, in the second half as goalie Anastasia Dipeso (C. Milton Wright) stopped all seven of her chances. Erin Demek (Pacapsco Middle School) added two goals for Maryland.

“It’s kind of amazing how so many girls from different ends of the state and different states can come together as a team,” Scane said. “It’s amazing how well we all cooperated with each other. They took us in.”

Scane said she has plenty to take back to Michigan as she begins her high school career.

“I learned how girls here play, it’s kind of different than Michigan,” she said. “Their stick skills are amazing and you have to cooperate with your team if want to get to the next level.”

Keating, Georgia Esmond (Glenwood Middle School), Sydney Foster (Bullis School), Eliza Melia (Calvert Middle School), Caroline Blandford (Stevensville Middle school) andceliadean Arthur (Maryvale Prep) each scored once. Taylor Suplee (Bullis) was the other goalie.

For Long Island, 2020 Emma Ward (Babylon) and 2019 Madison Ahern (Cohasset) scored once apiece.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Hurricane Arthur failed to halt the action today as hundreds of athletes competed in the National 175 Best of the Best Individual Showcase at Mitchel Complex on Long Island.

ToplaxRecruits.com spoke with three players as well as co-director Jeff Brameier about the event, which is part of a weekend lacrosse showcase that is raising money for the Navy Seals Foundation. A presentation was to be held today, but was rescheduled for Saturday due to the inclement weather.

National 175 will donate $10,000 to the Navy Seals Foundation as action continues Saturday in the Best of the Best Team Showcase, which has attracted 39 elite club programs.

Teilen Celentano

Teilen Celentano

Teilen Celentano, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Midfield and Faceoffs, 2015

Why did you attend the showcase?
Celentano: “My team is involved in the 175 tournament and and I saw that as a great opportunity so I applied and got in. I’m used to playing in the United States. I’ve been playing lacrosse in the US since I was 13, going everywhere from Baltimore to Philly and Florida so it’s just another weekend away from home.”

How did you perform today?
Celentano: “I felt good today; it was a little wet and a little soggy, but I’ve been having fun and playing well. I’ve been scoring goals, making plays and winning faceoffs. I’m playing on shin splints right now so my legs are hurting pretty bad, but I feel I’ve showed well. I’ve shown I have heart and I have worked through it and shown I have character. I really hope to get a Division I scholarship. In Canada we don’t have Division I lacrosse; we only have club lacrosse so the only real opportunity is to come to the US. The competition was strong today. I’m impressed with the skills, especially with the team I was on today. We had a good team today and I was really happy with it.”

Ryan Cornell

Ryan Cornell

Ryan Cornell, Darien (CT), Goalie, 2017

How did you perform in the showcase?
Cornell: “I feel pretty good about the way I played today. The first game was definitely better. In the second game the rain came on and turned it into a mud pit, but it was still fun. I hope to get seen by a couple of college coaches, play with my team over the Fourth of July weekend and have fun.

“The rain affected me a little more in the second game. It is harder to see in the rain and when the ball gets a little muddy you can’t really see it as well. I feel I stood out a little bit because I came out of the goal a little bit and intercepted a couple of passes. I still didn’t do too well with stepping to the ball and have to work on that more.”

Jake McMahon, Chaminade (NY), Goalie, 2017

Jake McMahon

Jake McMahon

How did you perform in the showcase?
McMahon: “I went up against pretty good competition. My outlets were alright and I made a good amount of saves. The rain affected the way I was able to throw the ball and it affected the way the ball comes to you because it bounces weird. I’m playing in the (BOB) tournament and I think it will be better than today because it’s not supposed to rain tomorrow.”

Brameier spoke about the goal of the showcases, which followed up Thursday’s tryouts for the Stars and Stripes for the High School Challenge vs. Team Maple Leafs.

Brameier: “We are still trying to grow the sport. The sport is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. It has gained in popularity, but you have to find ways to branch it out across the country. It’s all the way out to California and it is forking out to Texas, Florida and Arizona. That is the exciting part about why we are doing this kind of programming; kids can see a sport and the way it is played.

“This neck of the woods is sort of the birthplace of lacrosse between Baltimore and Long Island, which are considered the hotbeds of it. Part of why we do this is to see it continue to grow and what will help are more college coaches and colleges picking it up. It is just a matter of time before more colleges start picking it up, like Stanford, USC, Texas and down to Florida and the SEC schools. You are seeing more of these showcases because it is getting competitive for spots and kids want to find a way to get themselves out there and get into a good school. This sport helps them get into a college they might not have necessarily got into on their own.”

Brameier spoke on the importance of supporting organizations like the Navy Seals Foundation.

Brameier: “You have to have a purpose in life and in this day and age there are a lot of people that do a lot of good things for our country. We decided to latch on to the Navy Seals Foundation because it is in the growing stage. They aren’t as recognized as some of these other foundations and any bit that we can do to not just support them but to get them to be recognized and understood is good.

“The popularity of the Navy Seals certainly grew with some of the missions they have done in recent times and the movies that have come out. But I think there is more to it you just can’t fathom the families of the Navy Seals and what they go through and that is true of all our troops. To me this is a way to give back to our country and those that are serving and protecting us and giving us the rights and freedoms we have in this country. I think our donation isn’t big enough. It is an opportunity for us to say thanks. The donation is part of saying thanks but the bigger part is getting the word out, getting the recognition out and getting people to know there is a Navy Seals Foundation. It is just another great association to be involved with.”

“Our goal for next year is to go all the way to states. We have learned that we really need to work on getting and keeping possession of the ball and that will be the focal point of what we will work on for next year.”

Thank You: “I would have to thank my Team Elevate coaches, Dave Kotowski, Victoria Kotowski, Bob Smith, and Bob DeSimone because I know that I would not be able to have the opportunity to verbally commit to an amazing school like Syracuse without their guidance and support.”

Other schools considered: High Point University, University of Southern California, Columbia University, Cornell University
