Jake McCaughan

Jake McCaughan

High School: St. Augustine Prep, N.J.

Graduation Year: 2017

Position: LSM, Defensive Middie, Close Defense

College Choice: Penn State University (ConnectLAX college profile)

Club Affiliation: Dukes LC, SouthShore

Major lacrosse honors, All-Star teams, Camps, Showcases: Blue Chip, Maverick, Adrenaline

Academic honors, service projects: Dean’s Honor Roll at St. Augustine Prep. Service included working with the Ronald MacDonnell House in Camden and taking part in the Spirit of the Holidays initiative.

What will you major in/study?
Business/Finance

Why did you choose the school? “Penn State University has so much to offer! Academically, their business school is considered one of the best. Their alumni base is among the largest in the world. I had the chance to speak with a number of them and each one talked about their experience being incredible. They all stay very connected to the school and alumni years after graduation. And finally, when my family and I visited Coach (Jeff) Tambroni and his staff it felt right!”

What are your thoughts on this past HS lacrosse season/team’s outlook for next season? “Our team played an amazing schedule. We played the very best high school lacrosse teams from Maryland to Connecticut. We got better each game and ended up losing to Bergen Catholic in the New Jersey State semifinals. Our record was 17 wins and 6 losses. We only graduated six seniors and have very talented players to back them up. We are really looking forward to next year. Coach Valore is a great coach and leader. He helped me so much through this recruiting process.

Thank You: “I want to thank my mom and dad for everything they do for me. I also have two older brothers that are very good athletes and they have encouraged me to work hard and to learn from both their successes and challenges. My brother Dylan is going to play for the University of Tampa in the fall. Finally, I want to thank all of my coaches from when I first started playing lacrosse. Special thanks to Coach Flexon, Helm, Christmas, McKinney, Greg and Braungart.”

Other schools considered? Maryland, Denver and Richmond

Nikki Ortega said that playing for Team Heather Leigh Albert at the annual Vail Lacrosse Shootout was “an amazing experience and one that I will never forget.”

Ortega, a 2015 US Lacrosse All-American attack from Long Island’s Middle Country, was one of five rising seniors that played alongside a Who’s Who of girls’ lacrosse senior standouts that rolled to the Vail Shootout High School championship last week.

Team HLA, vail Lacrosse Shootout champion

Team HLA, Vail Lacrosse Shootout champion

Team HLA defeated a talented but overmatched Team 180 2015, 13-3, in Thursday’s title game. In six wins (three playoff games), Team HLA outscored its foes by an amazing 88-8.

Team HLA featured many top players from the East Coast as well as Blake School (MN) senior Lydia Sutton, a USC signee who was named the tournament MVP.

“It was such a great experience, especially playing with the top college recruits,” said Ortega, who is committed to Notre Dame. “I learned so much in the past week – all mental.”

Nikki Ortega

In the title game, goalie Gussie Johns (St. Stephen’s & St Agnes, VA/USC) had nine saves while Ortega, Lindsey Ronbeck (2015, Manhasset, NY/Florida), Shelby Scanlin (Cardinal Gibbons, NC/Maryland), and Emilia Lopez-Ona (Princeton, NJ/Penn) each had two goals for Team HLA.

Also for Team HLA, Sutton (now trying out for Team Canada’s U19 team), Kelly Myers (Georgetown Visitation, DC/Stanford), Julia Glynn (Manhasset/Harvard) Mary Claire Byrne (Holy Vhild, VA/Virginia Tech) and Ellie Majure (2015, St. Stephen’s/Duke) all scored once.

Other team members included Lindsey Ronbeck (2015, Manhasset/Florida), Allison Shields (2015, Notre Dame Prep, MD/Virginia), Maggie Jackson (2015, Georgetown Visitation/Virginia), Olivia Blakeman (St. Edward’s, FL/ Loyola), Daniele Kelly (Rumson-Fair Haven, N.J./Virginia), Madison Crutchfield (St. Paul’s, N.H./Duke), and Olivia Mikkelsen (St. Stephen’s/Notre Dame), Emily Koufakis (Manhasset/Stanford) and Sophie Davidson (St. Stephen’s/Dartmouth).

“These were the nicest girls I ever played with and probably the most skilled,” said Ortega. “We had one practice that lasted an hour and already we were moving the ball so well. In the games, every goal was from a pass, rarely did we have 1v1’s, they were all assisted. It was so beautiful and so much fun playing like that.”

Scanlin, the Player of the Year in North Carolina, agreed with Ortega.

“Before this opportunity with Team HLA, I had never been surrounded by so many girls with such amazing personalities and talent,” she said. “It was incredible to be a part of a group of 17 players that bonded so quickly, and played as if we had been teammates and friends forever.

“Due to everyone’s selfless play and advanced skill level the ball moved effortlessly from girl to girl; each play ending with a well deserved goal. However, the best part of playing with Team HLA, was a hearing a younger player, whose team we had just beaten by 10 goals, say ‘that was the coolest thing ever.’

Shelby Scanlin

Shelby Scanlin

“Although lacrosse is growing in North Carolina, the overall success of the sport is nowhere near that of Virginia or Maryland. So when I was given the opportunity, on Team HLA, to play with girls from these outstanding programs I soaked up anything new that I could learn. Yet, beyond this, I cannot wait to play against the 17 new friends that I made on Team HLA in college. It will be great to show up to a game, and recognize a face or two on the other team.”

Ortega and Scalin did admit that playing in the high altitude of Colorado was difficult at first.

“Playing in this altitude really opened my eyes,” she said. “It was so much harder to breathe when playing and you had to get past it.”

“In order to prepare for the Colorado altitude, I drank what felt like gallons and gallons of water,” added Scanlin. “Our first practice was a little rough for everyone; following the warm-up lap each girl was sucking wind. However, after each game, I became more adjusted to the elevation and breathing became much easier. I think after a while, we all stopped focusing on the altitude adjustment, and started becoming more aware of the amazing environment we were playing in.”

Ortega – who will represent Long Island next weekend at the Under Armour Underclassmen Games and later this month will try out for the US U-19 team at Stevenson University – also enjoyed the fruits of Vail.

“It was so beautiful, we went white water rafting and got see all the scenery,” she said. “We went zip lining right over a river and it was incredibly beautiful. We bonded so well. We had so many activities. It was really fun.”

Scanlin said she can take lessons learned with her to college.

“Because each girl on Team HLA is going to play at a high-ranked D1 college program, I felt that I was already playing on a college team,” she said. “It was a great warm-up/taste of what is to come in the next month or so.

“I think all of the incoming freshman, definitely including myself, are all a little nervous for this new college lacrosse experience; however, getting to know and play with each other released a little anxiety because we understand that we are all going through it together. Most importantly, this week in Vail with Team HLA made me even more excited to start playing this fall at Maryland, and to begin this new college lacrosse experience.”

Team 180 lost only to Team HLA and was led by all-tournament picks Kelli Warmouth (Rampart, CO) and Kendra Lanuza (Chatfield, CO/Denver).

“I’ve heard about Building Blocks and I knew they were a great team from New Jersey so we just came to play. After the first two games we just tried to stay hydrated and out of the sun so we would be ready for the championship game. Our team stepped it up and we won because of it.”

FLG finished the tourney a perfect 7-0, defeating Team Turnpike (N.J.), 7-6, to reach the finals.

FLG led, 3-2, heading into the half, but Building Blocks got goals from Will Barnett and William DeMartin (two goals) to tie it.

“I feel like the team really stepped up in the second half to pull out the big win today,” said Gray. “We really jelled together today. We got some rest in between the games today so we felt good coming into the championship.

“Our defense played great in the first two games and I knew they would do the same in this game. I knew I wouldn’t have to work too hard. I feel like every team really wants to come after us because we are from Long Island, but it makes it more fun and more challenging. It feels great to beat a good team and get a championship.”

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Jake Martellucti tallied three goals to help the Duke’s Lacrosse Club (PA) repeat as 2017 division champions today with a 7-4 victory over True Blue (N.Y.) in the National 175 Best of Best Team Showcase at Mitchell Complex.

“This feels awesome,” said Martellucci, a 2017 midfielder at Episcopal Academy who has committed to Maryland and was named Duke’s game MVP.“This is the first win for the Dukes so that feels great. We have been working so hard so far this summer and it feels great to finally have a championship.

“We felt like we needed to get this win because all we’ve done in this tournament. It would’ve been a waste if we didn’t win. We knew this team was going to be really good. They have some commits on that team so we knew we just had to play hard and keep the effort up the whole game.”

True Blue held a 3-2 lead going into the halftime. In the third quarter the Dukes went on a 3-0 run to seize a 5-3 lead. Dylan Tocco tallied two goals for the Dukes while tournament MVP Devon Tavani (Ridley) and Dom DiStefano (Malvern Prep) also scored.

“We felt we needed to win this game,” said Tocco (Moorestown, NJ). “We just wanted to get this win because this was the first championship. Our team played together and stepped it up in the second half. We never gave up and played hard. This feels pretty good and we are all pretty happy.”

Kevin Snyder tallied two goals for True Blue.

Huntington (N.Y.) rising junior midfielder Irina DeSimone has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at High Point University.

Irina DeSimone ledger:

Irina DeSimone

Irina DeSimone

High school: Huntington High School, N.Y.

Position: Midfielder

Year of graduation: 2016

College choice:
High Point University

Club affiliation: Team Elevate

Lacrosse honors: 4 year varsity for high school team, All Division, Brine National Team 2012

Academic honors: Honor Roll since 7th grade, Honor Society, Pride Award, All County in Fencing and All Division All Conference in Field hockey

Intended major: Pre Law or Business Management

Who did you choose school? “I chose High Point because it seemed liked the perfect fit for me. I wanted an academically challenging school, with competitive athletics as well. The campus was absolutely beautiful and everyone there was beyond kind. And to add on to the amazing campus were some amazing coaches who I fell in love with already: Lyndsey Boswell, Lauren Norris and Ana Heneberry. Another reason I was so attracted to the school was how quickly the program is rising and becoming a threat, winning the Big South Conference two years in a row and making it into the NCAA tournament. I know for sure this is where I want to spend my four years of college playing lacrosse.”

Looking back at 2014 and ahead to 2015: “This past season, my high school team was coached by Kathy Wright and Molly Burnett and overall we can be described as a powerhouse and force to be reckoned with. No one had seen us as a threat, but we set records beating teams we hadn’t beaten for over 10 years! We also have extremely talented players who seemed to all work together and work as one unit. Game after game we challenged ourselves and made our way into the second round of playoffs, losing to Sayville in overtime, one game away from the County Championships. Although that was a huge disappointment, all but two are returning next year and I am confident we will make it just as far or even further!”

Thank You: “My parents are my biggest supporters and I don’t know where I would be without them. After being adopted from Ukraine and moving here in 1st grade with my two sisters, I asked my dad to play lacrosse. He has been by my side since then coaching and supporting me. Although it was just a game and something I did for fun, I can’t believe how far it has taken me. Its amazing how a sport can change a life, especially mine. Lacrosse has led me to meet incredible people and take me to amazing places, like High Point University. Also, my coaches Dave Kotowski, Vic Kotowski, Bob Smith and my dad, Robert DeSimone, have been the best supporters and have been motivating me since day one.”

Other school considered:
Cornell University

BOYDS, Md. – Patriot High (VA) 2015 attack Olivia Fraser said she is just getting into the recruiting scene. Her performance in last week’s Brine National Lacrosse Classic High School Girls’ All-Star Game should definitely help.

Fraser scored three goals, including the game-winner as the Red All-Stars edged the White All-Stars, 9-8 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

Fraser was a key component on a Patriot team that went 13-4 and fell to Battlefield in the Class 6A North region semifinals.

“I started late in the recruiting process and I wasn’t thinking about Brine at all until my best friend tried out,” said Fraser. “I loved it.”

Fraser helped Virginia finish 2-1-1 in Brine NLC Pool Play, barely missing out on a playoff spot on a goals against tiebreaker.

Fraser admitted that she was challenged in the All-Star Game.

“We played a lot of teams in Virginia from low brackets, so coming here has been an amazing experience,” she said. “It was fun to watch and it was so much fun, I loved it. I think I did really well.”

Fraser said her Virginia team met all expectations.

“It was awesome and everyone meshed well,” she said. “Our connections at midfield were really good.”

Fraser’s biggest strengths are her stickwork and her smarts around the cage.

“I grew up with brother s in lax and they taught me guys’ stuff, so I like the give-and-go and quick passes,” she said.

Also for the Red All-Stars, Georgia’s 2015 Jordan Mitchell of Bishop England (S.C.) and Illinois’ Maria Johnson (2016, Lafayette, MO) each had two goals.

Thirty-eight teams – including many of the top-ranked squads in North America – will compete this weekend in the second annual National High School Lacrosse Showcase at two sites in Columbia, Md.

The lineup includes 11 state/major conference champions and the top two teams (Boys’ Latin, Culver Academy) and five of the top 10 from the final Warrior/TopLaxRecruits.com Rankings. Games will be played at Blandair Regional Park (three turf fields) and nearby Oakland Mills High (one stadium turf field, one grass field).

Boys’ Latin coach Bob Shriver and McDonogh’s Andy Hilgartner are the founders of the event, which is sponsored by Rabil/Warrior.

“That field is amazing,” said Shriver. “You can make a very strong argument that this is the finest collection of high school teams ever assembled.

“Everyone will be missing a player or two (due to Under Armour games being held in Towson), but that will allow another player to get a chance. Last year we had 22 teams and that was the first go-round. Everybody heard what a nice event it was and we are thrilled with the quality and quantity and the diversity of the teams.”

Shriver noted that there are two teams from Texas (Dallas Jesuit and Highland Park) as well as one from the West (Washington’s Mercer Island). Colorado state champion Regis Jesuit was unable to return because of its participation in the World Games, but it is expected to come back next year. The Midwest teams include Culver (IN), Ohio state champion Upper Arlington, Illinois state champion New Trier and Hudson (Ohio state semifinalist).

The venue features turf fields, stands, concessions, lights and scoreboards at Blandair and two more fields 300 yards away at the high school. Pool play games are Friday and Saturday with playoff games Saturday and Sunday and consolation games Sunday.

Admission is free and there will be food and lacrosse vendors.National High School Showcase

How can you make $120/hour doing something you love?ConnectLax

It’s pretty simple. Private lacrosse lessons allow you keep a stick in your hand, enjoy the sun and share the game with the next generation of players. For college players and recent graduates, it’s a great summer gig with flexible hours.

Because you collect 100% of your rate directly from your players, everyone can create an instructor profile on ConnectLAX and start marketing their lessons for free. Sign up at http://www.connectlax.com/private-lessons.

Tyler King, a recent graduate of D3 Denison, works in New York and gives private lessons for $120/hour on his free time. He was contacted through his ConnectLAX instructor profile, where he sets his availability and rates.

A recruited athlete can be 30% more likely to get admitted to a college than a non-athlete. That makes lacrosse a powerful tool in gaining admission to a great school. Private lessons provide players with the personal attention needed to elevate their game and reach their goals. As an instructor, you can be a part of that success.

Create your free instructor profile at http://www.connectlax.com/private-lessons and build your online reputation and rates through your ConnectLAX profile.

This is a guest blog by ConnectLAX co-founder Gage Mersereau. ConnectLAX, the official sponsor of TopLaxRecruits.com Boys’ Recruits. ConnectLAX helps recruits highlight their skills and connect with college coaches. Recruits maximize their recruiting exposure with a mobile recruiting profile that is linked to their team’s roster, helping coaches find them on the field and evaluate their profile while watching them play.
