BOYDS, Md, – Alex Bianchi (Aquinas Institute) scored three goals to help Rochester open defense of its two Brine National Lacrosse Classic boys’ high school championships Monday with an 8-5 victory over Florida at the Maryland Soccerplex.

Alex Bianchi

Rochester finished 1-0-1 in the first day of action in the three-day tourney that features 20 regional teams. Rochester also tied New Jersey, 6-6. Rochester and New Jersey were tied atop Pool A with identical records.

Bianchi, a 6-2 attackman, was proud to play for a team that also won the last two Brogden Cup championships, defeating Canada in a tourney in Florida that matches the Brine NLC champion with a Canadian All-Star team.

“I did not play last year but hearing from other guys who have played, they said it was a great tourney, with great exposure,” said Bianchi. “They also said everyone had a lot of fun playing together.

“I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to play this year.”

Rochester was trailing, 3-2, vs. Florida before going on a 6-1 spurt to take control. Eric Munn (2014 attackman) added two goals and Mitchell Standera (2014 midfielder, Pittsford), James Felix (2015 midfielder, Pittsford) and Stephen Quinzi (2014 attackman, Pittsford Sutherland) each scored once. Kevin Maguire (2015, Pittsford Sutherland) made six saves.

“You feel like some teams want to beat us because we won the last couple years,” said Bianchi. “I am pretty happy, but each game we need to keep getting a little better.”

In the tie with New Jersey South, Quinzi scored three goals and Colin Greenway (2014 attackman, Williamsville East) added two for Rochester. Dean Roseman (2014 midfielder, Penn Charter) had four goals for New Jersey South, while goalies Tyler McCormick (2016, Seneca) and Matt Sefcik (2015, Morrestown Beard) each had five saves.

In Pool B, Syracuse is 2-0 with victories over West, 5-2, and Washington D.C., 6-4. Max Smith (2014) has 12 saves in the two games for Syracuse while splitting halves.

In Pool C, Long Island North is 2-0 with wins over Illinois, 9-0, and New England North, 6-5. Alex Concannon (2015 attackman, Syosset) had three goals for LI North in the shutout over Illinois and Tyler Dunn (2015 attackman, Manhasset) scored a pair in the victory over NE North.

BOYDS, Md. – Two-time defending girls’ high school champion Maryland opened play Monday in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic with wins over Illinois (7-4) and New Jersey (10-7).

Sara Moeller

Maryland’s Sara Moeller

Sara Moeller (2015 attack, St. Paul’s School for Girls) and Jordan Stevens (2016 attack, Mt. Hebron) each had three goals in the wins for Maryland, which stood tied atop Pool A with Syracuse (also 2-0).

The Brine NLC girls’ field features 10 regional teams from around the country.

“Maryland has the lax powerhouse on the East Coast; we work really hard and I hope we can win three years in a row,” said Moeller, whose high school reached the IAAM championship game before falling to the nation’s No. 1 team, McDonogh, in a tight game.

Moeller said her team expected New Jersey to be strong.

“We were scouting New Jersey and our coaches felt they were going to be tough,” said Moeller. “We had to keep our heads in the game.

“We had a shaky beginning, but as the minutes passed I feel we dominated the rest of the game. We had a hard first game; we just weren’t used to playing with each other. But I think we are jelling really quickly.”

For New Jersey, Sara Dickinson (2015 attack, Wilton, CT) had two goals.

Harley Barrett

PA’s Harley Barrett

In Pool B, Pennsylvania – which fell to Maryland in last year’s finals – took the lead in Pool B with two victories. First it routed the West, 17-6, and then it handled Washington D.C., 6-3 as goalie Harley Barrett (2015, Perkiomen Valley) played the entire game and made nine saves.

“Our other goalie is from California and could not get her plane ticket,” said Barrett. “They told me I would be the only goalie this morning.

“The whole team has been great helping me out. The defense is getting in front and slowing shots down. I like the girls and we all work well together. We are having fun. We’re building our confidence going into the next few games.”

Corrie Anderson (2014 attack, Hershey) led Pennsylvania with four goals in the win over West and two more against Washington D.C.

BOYDS, Md. – Pennsylvania (Pool B) was the only undefeated team and New Jersey used a key 6-5 win over Syracuse to earn the top seed in Pool A as the Final Four was set for the girls’ playoffs at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic following Day 2 action Tuesday at the Maryland Soccerplex.

Pennsylvania (4-0 in pool play, 5-0 overall), last year’s runnerup, will play three-time defending champion Maryland (3-1) at 9 a.m. today in one semifinal. The other semifinal pits New Jersey (3-1) vs. Long Island (2-1-1). The title game is at 11 a.m.

New Jersey, which fell to Maryland, 10-7, on Monday, vaulted itself to the top spot in Pool A with its victory over previously-undefeated Syracuse and a 9-5 win over Illinois.

“Today we worked a lot on transition and we really came together and became a team,” said New Jersey’s Jenna McNicholas (2015 MF, Staples, Westport, CT), who had two goals in the Illinois triumph. “Going into the Syracuse game, we were nervous.

“We got momentum with the win. We are coming together and communicating. I’ve made some really good friends; it’s exciting.”

Dakota Pastore (2015 MG, Somerville) and Taylor Patrizi (2014 MF, Cherry Hill East) each scored twice in the win over Syracuse and Brittany Read (2014, Eastern Regional) had five saves in the second half for New Jersey.

Pennsylvania had a key 9-6 win over Long Island to clinch the Pool B title as Corrie Anderson (2014 ATT, Hershey) had four goals and Kira Gensler (2014 MF, Spring-Ford) added a pair.

Academy playoffs

In the Middle School playoffs, two-time defending champion Pennsylvania meets Long Island at 8 a.m. while New Jersey and Syracuse square off in the other semifinal at 8 a.m. The title game is at 10 a.m.

BOYDS, Md. – If the college coaches did not know how to spell his name before, they know more about Nicholas Hatzipetrakos now.

Nicholas Hatzipetrakos

Nicholas Hatzipetrakos

The Syosset rising junior midfielder from Long Island North scored three goals Tuesday to help the White All-Stars topple the Blue, 8-3, in the 2015-16 All-Star Game at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic here at the Maryland Soccerplex.

Besides his performance in the All-Star Game, Hatzipetrakos has been a key for LI North’s drive to the playoffs. His squad went undefeated in pool play and is playing this morning in the quarterfinals vs. Ohio.

“The experience is great,” said Hatzipetrakos. “We had a great (All-Star) team. There are a lot of great kids from all over the country and a lot of competition.”

Hatzipetrakos said many of the members of the Long Island North squad already knew each other before the games began Monday.

“We have great goalkeepers and lot of chemistry,” he said. “There is a lot of ball movement. The offense has put up numbers; I think we have 35 goals and only nine given up. The defense is doing great.”

New Jersey South surprises

One of the biggest surprises this year is the success of both New Jersey South and New Jersey North. The New Jersey teams split into two this year for the first time and both qualified for this morning’s quarterfinals.

Steven Gottlieb

Steven Gottlieb

NJ South’s Steven Gottlieb (2014 DEF, Penn Charter, PA) was one of several NJ South players that made the All-Star team. Gottlieb had two caused turnovers to help the White team topple the Blue, 8-6, in the 2014 All-Star Game.

“I think it (All-Star Game) went well,” said Gottlieb. “Most of the guys I played against in the season due to our (National) schedule so it was nice to see how their seasons ended.”

Gottlieb said his NJ South squad – which plays Maryland at 9 a.m. in the quarterfinals – jelled quickly in all aspects.

“We came in as the underdog and definitely turned some heads,” he said. “Rochester is the tourney champion last two years and we tied them and then we beat Florida to make the playoffs,” he said. “That was exciting.

“Our defense is playing well. We have only let in like 15 goals in four games and that is pretty impressive for a tourney like this.

“Both our goalies have played well and our offense is moving the ball really well. They are taking their time on possessions and that is helping us out on ‘D.’”

Also for the White in the 2014 All-Star Game, Daniel Grossman (LI South, ATT, Paul D. Schrieber) had two goals, Peter DeSoimone (NE North, ATT, LaSalle Academy, RI) had two goals and Jonathan Spevacek (Florida, MF, Spanmish River) added two goals while Andrew McLaughlin (DC, MF, Georgetown Prep) had four assists and Nick Forrest (MD, A, Glenelg) had a goal and two assists.

Playoffs

In other quarterfinal games this morning, two-time defending champion Rochester faced off with Upstate rival Syracuse at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., New Jersey North meets Illinois.

The semis are at 11 a.m. and the finals are at 1 p.m.

Academy playoffs

In the Middle School quarterfinals which began at 8 a.m., pairings are Long Island North vs. Alabama; New Jersey vs. Georgia; New England North vs. Texas; and Rochester vs. Long Island South.

The semis are at 10 a.m. and finals are at noon.

BOYDS, Md. – Kristin Anderson (Eastport-South Manor, 2014) scored three goals and Carolyn Carrera (Riverhead, 2014) added two as Long Island coasted to a 9-3 victory today over New Jersey for the Brine National Lacrosse Classic High School Girls’ Championship at the Maryland Soccerplex.

Long Island led, 5-1, at halftime and stretched its lead to 9-1 late in the game.

Long Island won the Brine NLC Girls’ HS championship

“We only had like four players from last year’s team and we didn’t know one another at the beginning,” said Carrera. “I thought after we lost to Pennsylvania (9-6 on Tuesday) that we realized we had to step it up.

“Against Florida it all came together (12-1 win). I loved it. It was awesome. We all hung out and really got along so well.”

BOYDS, Md. – Eight different players scored as New Jersey North defeated Long Island North, 8-6, today in the Brine National Lacrosse Classic Boys’ High School championship game at the Maryland Soccerplex.

NJ North wins Brine NLC

New Jersey North won the Brine NLC Boys’ HS championship

New Jersey North used pinpoint passing and reeled off four goals to open the second half and seize a 7-4 lead. Then it used strong defense and solid goaltending to claim the first Brine title for its state (New Jersey split into two teams this year after having one team the first five years of the tourney).

By unseating Rochester’s hold on the National title, New Jersey North will advance to play Canada in January for the Brogden Cup, held in Orlando, Fla.

“We all pretty much knew each other and we had great team chemistry,” said NJ North’s Pat Galvin (Seton Hall Prep, 2014, attack), who had one goal and one assist. “We got the kinks out after the first game and them we came together.

“We moved the ball well and I put that to our team chemistry. We made some nice passes.”
