More than 200 teams and 4,000 players will compete in the the LAX For The Cure Summer Tournament Friday through Sunday at New Egpyt High School, NJ.

The event has two purposes: to provide a highly competitive tournament that brings many college coaches (at least 150 are expected); but more importantly to raise both awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer. Funds raised go to the North, Central and South Jersey Affiliates of Susan G. Komen.

Last year $238,000 was raised by teams and partners, breaking the previous year’s fundraising record. The tournament also drew a record 164 coaches and recruiters. In the tourney’s six-year existence, over $1 million has been raised for Susan G. Komen’s New Jersey Affiliates.

Much of the funds go to programs that offer breast health, breast cancer screening, education, treatment support and outreach. Other funds go to to national breast cancer research programs in search of a cure.

According to the Lax For The Cure website, the tournament was the initial concept of Jessica Shoulberg, Mendham High School Coach, Director of STEPS Lacrosse and Director of the Lax By The Sea tournament. During the summer of 2007 the STEPS Lacrosse club had three mothers fighting breast cancer.

Shoulberg believed that the growth of girls’ lacrosse and the summer tournament circuit would meet the ideals of players, parents, clubs, and college coaches in raising funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer in a highly competitive field.

Age groups include 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019-20.

Haverford School (PA) rising sophomore midfielder Brendan O’Neill has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Johns Hopkins University.

Brendan O’Neill ledger:

Brendan O'Neill

Brendan O’Neill

High school: The Haverford School, Haverford, PA

Year of graduation: 2016

College choice: Johns Hopkins University

Club affiliations: The Baltimore Crabs / Mesa Fresh

Major camps: Nike Blue Chip, Adrenaline Black Card Showcase

Intended major: Undecided

Why did you choose Johns Hopkins? “I chose JHU for many reasons. It’s an amazing academic university as well as a phenomenal lacrosse program. I grew up on Charles Street, a mile away from JHU before I moved to Philadelphia last year so I’m very familiar with and love the location. My uncle (Greg Lily) was an All-American defensemen at Hopkins and my aunt (Kristie Lily) is in the (school’s) Hall of Fame, so there’s a good amount of legacy from my family there. I have a great deal of respect for coach (Dave) Pietramala and I look forward to the opportunity to play for a national championship.”

Your HS team’s outlook for 2014:
“Our outlook for the season is very positive. We were very young this year, but now we have a lot of experience as a young team and hope to compete for the Inter-Ac title.”

Thank Yous: “I’d like to thank coach (John) Nostrant and the entire coaching staff at Haverford School for helping me tremendously; all my teammates at Haverford, especially Kip Taviano ((#10ve); Ryan McClernan, my first coach and director of the Crabs Lacrosse Club, and all my other coaches with the Crabs that have worked so hard to teach me the game; my Mesa Fresh coaches; and last but not least, my parents who support me each and every day.”

ANNE ARUNDEL, Md. – Below are 10 players that shined in Thursday night’s 2014, 2015 and 2016 All-Star Games between the Maryland FREESTATES and Virginia-DC WAVELAX teams at Anne Arundel Community College.

Brian Weingast, Langley, WAVELAX, 2016, Defense, Weingast has impressive size and he moves his feet well. The rising sophomore clears the ball well up field and he makes smart plays on the defensive side of the field.

Phillip Robertson, WAVELAX, St. Anne’s Belfield, 2016 Attack,
Robertson has tremendous talent. The attackman is fluid when moving towards the cage for a shot. Always moving his feet and has his stick up ready for a feed, Robertson has a bright future in the game.

Christopher Dipretoro, FREESTATE, Northern H.S., 2014, Attack, Amazing lacrosse I.Q. from this young man. The Northern rising senior has a wicked shot on goal and has incredible dodges. Dipretoro looks to be having fun on the lacrosse field at all times.

Jake Anderson, WAVELAX, St. Johns, 2014, Midfield/FO, Anderson took the faceoffs for the Wavelax team. The rising senior has a great pinch and pop move and won the majority of the draws. He distributes the ball well when fast breaking towards the cage after a faceoff win.

Austin Brown, FREESTATE, Boys’ Latin, 2014, Midfield, Brown has some electric stuff on midfield. The BL middie can hustle up and down the field with no signs of laboring. Brown has some nifty dodge moves and can also play some defense.

Rashaad Wise, FREESTATE, Bullis, 2014, Defense, Wise has good lacrosse instincts on defense. The rising senior is quick and makes excellent checks. He has wheels when clearing the ball up field. Isn’t afraid to lay a hit.

Michael Meeks, FREESTATE, Broadneck, 2014, Goalie, Meeks is a bull in the cage. The rising senior is alert and is always talking to his defense. Meeks made some phenomenal saves on some of the best shooters from Wavelax that are committed to DI schools., which builds confidence. Good I.Q.

Cole Abid, FREESTATE, Wootton, 2015, Defense, Abid has some height and a muscular build. Abid has solid stick skills for a rising junior. The Wootton talent has some impressive checks and is always moving his feet.

Acie Newton, FREESTATE, Loyola-Blakefield, 2015, Goalie, Newton is still riding high after leading the Dons to be the 2013 MIAA Championship. Newton makes excellent decisions with the ball on a clear. Gets the ball out of his stick quick. Is talkative and moves his feet well.

David Williamson, WAVELAX, Paul VI, 2015, Midfield, Slater has a good I.Q. and makes good decisions with the ball. Has a motor. Is quick and looks to be a key for the Purple Eagles heading into his junior season.

Recruiting: FREESTATE-WAVELAX games are success in inaugural year

ANNE ARUNDEL, Md. – The inaugural FREESTATE vs. WAVELAX showcase at Anne Arundel Community College Stadium proved to be a success for all.

Tonight’s All-Star Games between elite underclassmen from Maryland (FREESTATE) vs. the DC-Virginia stars produced three entertaining games and a host of college coaches for an event that is hoped will continue to grow.

The FREESTATE teams took two of three, winning the 2016 battle, 16-10, and the 2014 contest, 12-8, before WAVELAX 2015 prevailed, 14-7.

Tourney organizer Jeff Doolan said the WAVELAX team was created this year to give the FREESTATE squads a chance to play out-of-state. Previously, the FREESTATE teams played squads from the Empire State Games, but two years ago the event was discontinued.

“I think it’s great,” said Doolan. “Last year the FREESTATEs team didn’t have a team to play so we decided to do the same thing for WAVELAX with the DC-Virginia teams. It was slow getting started, but now the kids understand and I think it will be something they gravitate to.”

Doolan said the FREESTATE process began with 170 players per class this year. Eventually the classes were pared to 44 players; and 22 players were selected from each class after the players met in an All-Star Game earlier in the month.

The WAVELAX teams were selected from last week’s All-Star Games, which also featured 44 players in each class. Those players were nominated by the area’s coaches.

Doolan said the FREESTATE games and tryouts had become big recruiting events. Now, the new format could become even bigger since the areas are so closely connected.

“I think, originally it was more just for exposure,” Doolan said of the FREESTATE games. “And it turned into one of the biggest recruiting events in the country. We are trying to do that that for the DC/VA kids as well.

“To top that off, you have the border war. That’s where we’re going to build this; the prestige could get really good kids involved. Now, we can have a little bit of a rivalry because bragging rights are at stake.”

Summer tournament: Project 120 provides girls’ tourney, leadership education

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Michele DeJuliis believes, as a lacrosse leader, she can do more than run tournaments and expose her older players to college recruiters.

So, she devised a way to run a competitive tournament while also providing education for something that benefits everyone.

DeJuliis, owner of Ultimate Lacrosse and Ultimate Events, is thrilled with the impact of her newest tournament, Project 120, which launched this weekend at Westtown School. The event, which began Friday and closes today, features 120 teams (from 2014 to 2020) and is providing educational workshops on leadership and positive decision-making by a non-profit organization called “Find the Courage.”

“Find the Courage” provides programs that educate and inspire people to make a positive impact by teaching strategies to help people to become “leaders that promote kindness, inclusion, encouragement, compassion and respect.” Sinply put, it’s an anti-bullying program that goes well beyond the term “anti-bullying” because it addresses all areas of treating others.

“The main point is to educate kids, along with playing,” said DeJuulis, an assistant coach for the US women’s National team that is gearing to play in the World Cup next month in Oshawa, Canada. “We just want to make a difference, and we can do that in two different ways.”

Find the Courage is run by Molly Creamer and Erin Rewalt, two former college athletes who company became an official non-profit in December, 2012. They provide interactive workshops to schools and organizations and during the tourney gave their workshops in 30-minute segments to all the players and adults involved.

DeJuliis said some of the proceeds of the tourney go to Finding the Courage. She also wants to raise awareness for the organization and its goals. Then, each year, the tourney will feature a new charity or non-profit as its focus.

“When they (Creamer and Rewalt) told me about it, I felt it was exactly what these kids need,” said DeJuliis. “It’s an opportunity to learn how to be kind each.

“Sometimes you have kids that say, ‘Hey don’t do that.’ But not a lot are OK with speaking up, especially around peers. They are trying to make kindness cool. They’re amazing because they are so energetic and kids really enjoy it.”

DeJuliis noted that kids can be mean to each other and no one realizes how to identify the behavior as mean.

“The feedback on the program is awesome,” she said. “Sometimes kids don’t even know bullying is happening because there are so many aspects to it. People are thinking, ‘Oh, it’s kids being kids. Kids are not always nice to each other.

“Because they are athletes, the kids can relate to them. All the kids have responded well.”

Creamer said the key is giving the kids a fun stage to learn new skills.

“We are providing a platform to help them make positive decisions in treating people,” she said. “I think it helps us that they are athletes and we are athletes.”

High school aged teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Ohio and Rhode Island are competing.

Graduation year:
2014

Position: Goalie

College choice: Stevenson

Club affiliations:
Mad lax 2011-2012; Cannons Elite 2013

What will you major in/study: Undecided

Why did you choose school:
“I love the campus and lacrosse program that came with it. Coach (Paul) Cantabene definitely knows how to produce a winning team; that I can’t wait to be a part of. Nothing about the school turned me away.”

Outlook for your high school team: “We will be a very young team with only 10 returning varsity players and I think that just, like last year, the younger guys can step up to play at the level of guys two years ahead of them. I’m confident that we will end with a winning season to carry on with our school’s reputation.”

Thank You: “I’d like to thank my parents. John and Laura, for helping me through this entire process; along with Coach, John Sothoron (Ryken), Zach Clark and Brooks Beaty (Madlax), and Joe Casalino (Cannons).”

NEW EGYPT, N.J. – Charlie Shoulberg says the Lax for the Cure Lacrosse Tournament has become a “win-win” event.

“We’d like to think it’s the best of all worlds,” said the event’s Co-Director. “We are raising money and running a good event.

“The key is educating youth about a horrible disease (breast cancer). For college coaches, they get to see some of the top talent from all over country. We are trying to make it a win-win for everybody.”

Shoulberg and his wife, Jess Shoulberg, who run STEPS Lacrosse, created the tournament six years ago. This year the event, held last Friday through Sunday on 14 fields at New Egypt High (N.J.), featured 232 teams and raised over $205,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The tourney also drew over 150 college coaches.

What makes this tourney different is that besides crowning team champions in seven age groups, the tourney honors team and individual fundraising champions (see list below). Nike gave the team champion members free sticks and individual winners got special Nike backpacks

“The kids are empowered to set up team fundraiser pages,” said Charlie Shoulberg. “They are not required, but many do get involved in fundraising and they get a great deal out of the experience.”

Why did you choose UVA?
“I’ve always wanted to go to UVA because of its outstanding academic reputation. The opportunity to play lacrosse at Virginia is special because of its tradition, and I admire the way that Coach Dom Starsia and the entire staff run their program. Every year UVA has a good chance to win a National Championship. I just feel like it’s a great fit for me.”

Outlook for your high school team:
“I think Conestoga has the ability to compete for a State Championship again next year.”

Thank You: “I’d like to thank the coaches at NXT Lacrosse for all of their help and support through the years. Special thanks to Coaches Brett Manney, Andy Hayes, Dylan Brown, Tim Muir and the rest of the NXT staff. Additionally, special thanks to Coach Brian Samson and the rest of the Conestoga coaching staff, and all of my teammates.”
