OWINGS MILLS, Md. – More than 2,000 participants – including hundreds of high school players – helped raise $126,000 for the Wounded Warriors Project as the 24-hour Shootout for the Soldiers lacrosse marathon weathered several storms and was once again a huge success last week.

The event, held at McDonogh School, began at 9 a.m. Thursday and ended at 9 a.m. Friday, although it had to be moved inside twice for a while due to heavy storms.

In the end, Team Stars beat Team Stripes, 349-336, as players from 8 to the 70s participated. But the score did not matter, of course.

Event coordinator Tyler Steinhardt said thousands of spectators attended the event, including more than 100 veterans. Thirty veterans actually played in the veterans contest at 9 a.m. Thursday.

“The No 1 goal is to build a connection to those who served and the people here in Baltimore,” said Steinhardt. “For me, the more I meet people who served, it becomes more special and more important.

“Raising money is a great priority, but it’s more about building a great event for people to go to, and building the cause.”

“It’s just fun event, a community event for a great cause. The idea is to use the common love of lacrosse and support that goal. Lacrosse has deep roots in the area and I think it’s pretty special. What’s made this so cool is that it’s so grass roots and it’s been organized by students.”

NFL champion Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh was one of the most noteworthy sports personalities to come by. Another highlight was a 4 a.m. hot dog eating contest by MLL players.

The event also featured a raffle and silent auction, each of which had to be moved inside Thursday night when the storms came. thanks to Paul Rabil, many MLL players participated. Steinhardt said more than 100 volunteers made the event possible; he also credited Jay Dyer, Andy Hilgartner and Larry Johnson.

“It began raining at 8:45 so we rushed people to the indoor facility,” said Steinhardt. “We moved the silent auction, the raffle, the food … and then we came back out a few hours later and in an hour we had to do it all again.

“This was a true testament to the adaptability and the helpfulness and overall spirit of the people,” said Steinhardt. “I have to than the 100 volunteers for everything they did.”

In two years, Shootout for Soldiers has raised nearly $250,000 for the Wounded Warriors Project, which provides programs and services to severely injured service members during their transition from active duty to civilian life.

Steinhardt, a 2012 Boys’ Latin graduate who recently completed his freshman year at American University, thanks his many volunteers. He noted that the number of players doubled this year.

From Press Release

New York State Legislator Sarah Anker recognized the Mt. Sinai Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse team on becoming the Class “C” New York State Champions earlier this month. Players, parents, and school officials gathered on the Mt. Sinai High School turf field to celebrate the victory.

“This is a great moment for Mount Sinai’s lacrosse program,” said Legislator Anker. “I commend the girls for their dedication and commitment to their sport.”

The win was a proud moment for veteran players, who competed at the Class “C” championship in 2011. This year the Mustangs returned to the championship in Cortland to defeat Skaneatles, 15-6. Mount Sinai completed its season with a perfect record of 20 wins and zero losses.

The Mustangs were trailing, 3-0, early in the game before going on a 9-0 spurt to take control following a time out by coach Al Bertolone.

“We just had to settle in a little bit,” he said. “We had to win a draw, get a goal, and then the floodgates opened.”

Mt. Sinai, which lost the 2011 Class C title, 9-8, to Christian Brothers Academy, got four goals apiece from sophomore Shayna Pirreca and her sister, Sydney Pirreca, a junior. The Mustangs got another three goals from senior midfielder Caroline Fitzgerald, who was named the tournament MVP.

McDonogh School (MD), which completed its fourth straight undefeated season, has been named the No. 1 team in the final TopLaxRecruits.com Girls’ Rankings.

The Eagles’ accomplishments over the last five years are perhaps unprecedented in the history of girls’ lacrosse.
They have captured five straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championships and won 91 straight games, only 12 short of the national record.

No. 1 McDonogh School

No. 1 McDonogh School

During the streak, McDonogh (22-0 this year) has continued to play many of the top teams around the country. And each year the Eagles have sent numerous players to Division I programs.

This year’s team faced massive graduation – including Taylor Cummings, one of the most decorated high school players ever. Cummings was a First Team All-American at Maryland in 2013, but her former team survived quite well.

McDonogh this year had several tough wins over nationally-ranked Milton (Ga.), 11-8, and Century (MD), 10-7. In the IAAM title game, the Eagles rallied for an 11-8 victory over a game St. Paul’s School for Girls.

McDonogh head coach Chris Robinson has a remarkable 169-10 record in his nine years at McDonogh. He formerly coached at Maryland’s Mt. Hebron, which owns the national mark for consecutive wins at 103 with Lock Raven (Md.).

This year’s McDonogh team clearly had its stars – including All IAAM picks Sam Burgess (attack, signed with Florida), Maggie Preas (defender, Virginia), and Megan Whittle (junior attack, committed to Maryland) – among the 21 Division I signees and commits. But Robinson said the team remained perfect because it played together, remained focused and continued to make the key play in clutch situations.

“This team was able to come up with the clutch play every time we needed it,” said Robinson. “We were down four or five times and each time someone made the big play and the team had the poise to come back and win.

“No time was more evident that in the (IAAM) championship game against St. Paul’s.”

In the St. Paul’s game, McDonogh found itself down, 8-4, and being thoroughly outplayed. But the Eagles would not go down.

“St. Paul’s was playing fantastic lacrosse and had everything going its way,” said Robinson. “They outplayed us until we saw a little daylight and then our girls would not be denied.

“It’s amazing; I don’t think a lot of people thought this team could do it after we lost a lot of seniors in the class of 2012. I am so proud of this Class of 2013 and their leadership.

“All season we took everyone’s best. St. Paul’s played a heck of a game; a great game!”

Burgess, who scored three straight goals to put McDonogh ahead, 9-8, in the final, said her team never played for the streak. “Obviously, we don’t want the streak to end,” said Burgess. “But that’s not what fuels us.

“We all have learned we like to play together and we like to win together, and so when we do that, good things happen.”
Burgess said the accomplishment of going undefeated for a fourth straight year was “amazing.”

“It’s honestly just amazing,” said Burgess. “I could not have asked for a better year. We haven’t lost a game of lacrosse in my four years here. I don’t think anybody can say that. It’s amazing.”

Robinson said his team was able to keep its focus each game.

“I know it’s the ultimate cliché, but we had to take ti one game at a time,” he said. “Fortunately, we play a very tough schedule and we knew there were 15 or 16 teams that could beat us if we did not play well and they did.”

Does Robinson ever think about the significance of the streak?

“Maybe now I will look at it because the season is over,” he said. “It is pretty amazing. But I am already looking toward next year and thinking about who is coming up to fill those spots.”

Ward Melville, which rolled to the New York Class A state championship with a perfect record, has been named No. 1 team in the final TopLaxRecruits.com Boys’ Rankings.

Ward Melville captains (from left) Christian Mazzone, Jack Bruckner, coach Mike Hoppey, Mike Zerbo and Brendan Hegarty celebrate state title

The Patriots, who were not considered a state favorite before the year, went 22-0 and were barely challenged the entire season. They were dominant in the post-season, handling Smithtown West, 11-6, and Massapequa, 12-3, to win the Long Island championship and later routing West Genesee, 16-4, for the state crown.

Ward Melville was know as an elite scholastic program for many years in the 1980s, ’90s and early 2000s. It has won eight state titles – and current head coach Mike Hoppey was an assistant for three of the undefeated champions. Hoppey, head coach for eight years, said this Ward Melville team may rank as the best of them all.

“I was an assistant for three undefeated state champions, but we never had teams play this consistently,” he said. “We played 22 good games this year.

“We never worried about (setting) goals this year. We didn’t focus on a state championship or a national championship. We just focused on each game.

“Certainly score-wise, game to game, this was probably the most dominant team we’ve had.”

Did Hoppey see this juggernaut coming before the year started?

Ward Melville after its Long Island championship

“Going into the season, we had a lot of questions,” said Hoppey, whose Patriots were Suffolk County finalists in 2012. “We really only had four full-time starters back, and two superstars (senior midfielders Jack Bruckner and Christian Mazzone).

“We had about six seniors that didn’t play a lot as juniors and we added to that three very, very good sophomores that made contribution.

“That said, all year the sum was greater than the total. Everybody did their part and we kept getting better and better.”
Another big key was the development of senior goalie Dan Nemirov.

“We hired a goalie coach, Scott Graham, and he worked with him,” said Hoppey. “If he was not the best goalie on Long Island, he certainly was one of the best. We got consistently great goaltending all year and that made a huge difference.”

“And Coach Chris Muscarella worked with the defense. We had one returning starter and yet they gave up four goals a game using all different types of defenses.”

The capper was the 16-4 blitz of traditional Upstate power West Genesee in the title game – a contest that had lacrosse fans in awe.

“You always save your best for last,” Hoppey said “I was watching the game on film and laughing at how we played so well.

“It was almost surreal the amount of brilliant plays we made, and the lack of mistakes. It wouldn’t have mattered who we played that day, it was such a high level.”

POTOMAC, Md. – Below are 10 players that shined in the WAVELAX Top 44 event Wednesday night at Bullis School.

The WAVELAX (Washington DC and Virginia Elite) teams (22 in each class, 2014, 2015 and 2016) chosen from this event will play the Maryland FREESTATE 22 teams chosen by the Maryland State Lacrosse Coaches Association (MSCLA).

WAVELAX teams will face off against the FREESTATE teams in the first annual contest between two lacrosse hotbeds on Thursday, June 27 at Anne Arundel Community College Stadium (games at 5 p.m., 6:30 and 8:00.).

Rosters will be released soon.

Click here for the FREESTATE team story.

Ten players that shined:

1. Joe Robertson, St. Anne’s-Belfield, Va., 2016, Attack, The rising sophomore attackman has great hands and moves the ball around well. Robertson is an under the radar talent, but with his ability to shoot the ball well on the run and get after the defender on the clear, he shows good lacrosse I.Q.

2. Paul Steel, Bullis School, Md., Defense, 2016, Steel is hard to miss on the field; he is doing what he needs to do to get the ball, and he is aggressive. The Bullis sophomore has quick feet to go along with an athletic frame which allows him to be everywhere on the defensive side of the field. Steel also clears well.

3. Brett Clark, Paul VI Catholic, Va., 2016, Midfield,
Pretty crafty middie who moves well up and down the field. Some sweet dodges and Clark had a nice rip to get a score for his team. Good I.Q.

4. Josh Wedel, Osbourn Park, Va., 2014, Attack, Wedel isn’t a selfish attackman, which stood out right away. The rising senior has some size, which he uses to his advantage around the crease to get open looks for easy goals. Very smart with the ball and got better as the game went along. For a bigger player, Wedel hustles for loose balls and on clears.

5. Alexander Friedrich, South Lakes, Va., 2014, Goalie, Friedrich made some amazing saves, one of which was on a Joe Kenna (D, North Carolina) shot. The South Lakes rising senior has good hands and his head is always on a swivel. Plus he is a talkative goalie and does a good job directing his defense.

6. Luke Smith, Gonzaga, D.C., 2014, Attack, This kid has Division I talent. Smith has great stick skills and has a monster shot on goal. Smith should get a lot of looks this summer from college coaches.

7.James Howard, McLean, Va., 2014, Defense, Mclean has some nasty checks and delivers some vicious hits. The defenseman makes it look easy when he moves the ball up field; he doesn’t rush it. Has a tall and big frame for a defender. The rising senior moves his feet well on close D.

8. Matt Zecca, Flint Hill, Va., 2014, Midfield/FO,
Zecca has good mechanics from the faceoff dot. The rising senior won a face and b lined for the cage for a sweet goal during the game. Zecca has quick hands and good I.Q.

9. Thomas Evans, Landon School, Md., 2015, Defense, Evans is a tall and strong defenseman that moves well around the crease. Gets good checks on his attackman and is quick to scoop groundballs. Has DI stuff.

10. Sullivan Warner, Loudon Valley, Va., 2015, Attack, Warner makes great plays and moves the ball well. Warner had a nice laser shot on goal in the 2015 game ,is quick and has a great I.Q. Should be someone to watch this summer on the recruiting circuit.

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Nassau County’s Griffin Miller (Calhoun) made his 11th save of the game with 27 seconds left, sealing an 11-10 victory over Suffolk County in the Rising Juniors game Thursday at the Long Island Showcase at St. Joseph’s College.

“On the last save I was really nervous,” said Miller. “I looked at the clock, and I knew if I made this save the game would be over.

“The player came in one on one and faked high, faked low and took the shot I stuck my foot out and barely got it with my toe. It was a heads up lacrosse play.”

The LI Showcase featured All-Star Games for three classes (2014, 2015 and 2016). Players were chosen forma series of tryouts in both Long Island counties. In the Rising Sophomores game, Suffolk won, 10-6; in the Rising Seniors game, Suffolk prevailed, 14-8.

“Towards the end of the game I started to get the feel for them,” said Miller. “I knew where they were shooting and I felt it. We bonded as a team, this was great and I hope I’m back next year.”

Nassau jumped to an 8-3 lead with 53.8 left in the first half of the Rising Juniors game and Suffolk answered with two quick goals before intermission. Suffolk then tied it, 8-8, before Alex Concannon (Syosset) scored two goals to give Nassau a 10-8 lead with 7:55 left in the game.

Suffolk scored two goals within 30 seconds to tie it, but with 4:58 left Paul Dilena (Massapequa) found Nick Spillane (Carey) for the go ahead goal. Spillane tallied four goals and two assists, while Gordon Purdie (Lynbrook) added two goals and two assists for Nassau.

Ryan Bray (Shoreham-Wading River) tallied two goals and two assists and Brian Willets (Smithtown East) scored two goals for Suffolk. Suffolk won 18 of the 24 face-offs.

“I think this is the first time in Long Island showcase history that we came out with a win for Nassau in the Rising Juniors game,” said Spillane. “I just wanted to come out, play hard and leave everything on the field.

“Most of us play together on summer teams so everyone knows each other and our team chemistry grew over the past few days. It feels great to come out with the win.”

In the rising sophomores game Suffolk jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held Nassau scoreless in the first quarter.

“This is a great game and a great win to beat Nassau,” said East Islip’s Jack Hannigan, who had two goals and two assists for Suffolk. “It’s a good rivalry and it feels nice to win this game. It’s a lot of fun playing in this game because we all know each.

“We play in the same county so it’s fun getting to play together. I kept getting nice feeds from the attackmen and (I had) open shots.”

Dylan Rhatigan (Sachem North) tallied two goals and one assist for Suffolk. Matthew Deluca (Farmingdale) grabbed seven saves for Nassau.

“I thought we played well and worked the ball well,” said Rhatigan. “It’s been an honor to get selected to this team and to get to play with these guys. This feels great getting the win over Nassau County.”

In the Seniors Game, Ryan Keenan (Smithtown West) had three goals and two assists for Suffolk.

“This is an all-star game I was just trying to come out here and play my best for college coaches,” said Keenan, “The Suffolk County coaches picked me and the rest of these guys for a reason – to come out here and win this game!

Dylan Rhatigan

“This feels good. We lost to Nassau my rising sophomore year and won my rising juniors year and it’s great knowing that I ended my Nassau vs. Suffolk games with a win.”
