Entering its sixth year, the premier national high school lacrosse tournament and middle school academy features more than 740 elite boys and girls lacrosse players from throughout the country representing their respective regions competing for a national championship.

The Brine National Lacrosse Classic offers select players the opportunity to showcase their lacrosse skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship in front of NCAA collegiate lacrosse coaches from every division.

MARLTON, N.J. – Kyra Harney had three goals and an assist and the Long Island Yellow Jackets (Team Thorn) rallied for a 7-4 victory over Quaker City (PA) in the 2014 championship game today at National Draw at Cherokee High.

The LI Yellow Jackets celebrate their National Draw championship

The Yellow Jackets trailed, 4-2, early in the second half after Quaker City’s Madison Tucker (Shipley School rising junior) scored off the draw. From then on, the Yellow Jackets won every draw and scored the game’s final five goals.

Rising senior Kylie Ohmiller (Islip, committed to Stony Brook) scored to make it 4-3 and rising senior Kasey Behr (St. Anthony’s, Virginia) tied it with nine minutes to play. Harney (Bay Shore, Duke) put her team up for good with 8:40 left and then fed Ohmiller for a 6-4 lead.

Rising senior Tiffany Zullo (Connetquot, Stony Brook) finished the scoring.

“She (coach Becky Thorn) just reminded us that we had a really good tournament so far,” said Harney. “We have been playing together and we had to flip the switch.

Kyra Harney

“Once we started to get possession of the draws – which is the big part of the game –we were able to capitalize off of that.”

The National Draw, in its 14th year, featured 213 teams in seven age classes. Teams from New England to Florida to the Midwest (Illinois) were represented.

The Yellow Jackets went 6-0 overall in the 24-team 2014 bracket, outscoring their foes, 83-10. They blitzed DEWLAX (NJ), 10-1, in the semifinals.

“We’re all basically recruited and most of us have been together since fourth grade,” said Harney. “It’s good to defend this title since we won it last year. It’s our last summer together and that’s kind of sad, but we have a few more tournaments.”

Harney, Ohmiller, Zullo and several others on the Thorn squad will play for the Long Island team in the Under Armour Underclassmen Games July 5-7 at Towson University.

Quaker City played with an all-2015 lineup and only a few subs. Coach George Dick’s squad (5-1 overall) rallied to defeat the second Yellow Jackets team (Jones), 5-4, to reach the finals.

Jane Henderson (Harriton rising junior) had three goals in the title game and also scored the game-winner in the semifinals.

“It was great; we did beat one Yellow Jackets team, which is fun,” said Dick. “We had the lead at halftime in the final, but we ran out of gas. We had one sub all tournament.

“Give them credit, they’re a great team. We played our hearts out. It was great for a PA team to make it to the final.”

Dick is coach at Harriton, which two weeks ago won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association title with a thrilling overtime win over Radnor. He had six members of that team on the Quaker City squad.

“Those six kids are battle tested and in good shape,” he said. “I thought they did a great job and came together as a team. This is the first time this (Quaker City) team has made it this far here.”

In the 2015 Division, the Yellow Jackets defeated Long Island rival Suffolk, 8-3. The Yellow Jackets also won the 2016 title with a 7-1 victory over Suffolk.

The 2014, 2015 and 2016 pool play games began Friday. The 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020-21 pool play games opened today and championship games will be held Sunday.

BROOKLANDVILLE, Md. – Below are 10 rising seniors that shined Saturday in the 2nd Session at the Baltimore Summer Kickoff at St. Paul’s School.

Nick Forrest, Roughriders Elite (MD),
2014, Attack, Forrest has the IT factor. The Glenelg rising senior makes plays and distributes the ball well around to his fellow attackman to set up a shot. Forrest has a terrific shot and is always moving his feet.

Kevin Doherty, Fuze (VA), 2014, Defense, Doherty is a versatile player who can take the faceoff and also play close defense. The Chantilly talent positions himself well when defending and his head is always on a swivel, making sure to get the groundball or block a shot.

Dan Sacchetti, South Shore (NJ), 2014, LSM,
Sacchetti is a bulldog with the longpole. The kid is everywhere and will lay a hit when needed. The St. Augustine defender is fun to watch play and makes an impact when he is on the field.

Nick Yancey, Roughriders Elite (MD), 2014, Defense,
Yancey is always talking and in a good way. The Middletown star is making sure his defenders are all where they need to be positioned. The rising senior has the talent to play at the next level. Moves feet well and has the lax I.Q.

Sam Gress, Haymakers (Ohio), 2014, Midfield, Gress is an impressive middie who has speed and great stick skills. Also Gress has some sweet dodges that are impressive. The Granville middie shots well with the opposite hand.

Jake Pantaleo, Fuze (VA), 2014, Defense/LSM, The rising senior has a motor and makes big checks when playing LSM and close defense. Always moving his feet and is always around the ball trying to check it away from the attackman. College coaches will be keeping tabs on this kid all summer.

Ted Bossidy, CT Chargers (CT), 2014, Midfield, Bossidy has a great lax I.Q. who gets to groundballs quickly and works the ball up field to his attackman without any problem. Plays a decent SSDM.

Jack Gilio, CT Chargers (CT), 2014, LSM, Gilio is fast when coming off the wing with the long stick. In the game against the Roughriders Gilio managed to check the ball out of a middie’s stick on the run and get the groundball and clear it up field with ease.

James Riley, MN Elite Gold (MN), 2014, Defense,
Riley caught the attention of coaches sitting along the sidelines with his impressive stick skills and footwork. Riley has a good lax I.Q. and is fun to watch play the game.

John Travisano, Roughriders Elite (MD), 2014, Midfield/Faceoff, Travisano is a big kid that is strong from the Faceoff X. The Howard High product has a nice pinch and pull move and is quick off the face. Roughrider coaches’ say Travisano is rapidly improving his offensive game.

Avon Grove (PA) rising sophomore midfielder Beau Kush has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of North Carolina.

Beau Kush ledger:

Beau Kush

Beau Kush

High School: Avon Grove High School, West Grove, PA (southwest of Philadelphia)

Graduation Year: Class of 2016

Position: Midfield

College Choice: University of North Carolina

Club Affiliation: Mesa Fresh 2015

Major lacrosse honors: Member of District 1 Champions 2013, Ches-Mont Co-Champions 2013, 1st Team All-Ches-Mont Midfielder 2013, Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Rising Sophomore 2013, Dick’s Sporting Goods National Champions (MESA) 2012, Rider MVP Champions (MESA) 2012, Keystone State Champions (CCLA) 2012, Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip rising freshman 2012, 2X CCLA U-15 All-Star.

Academic honors: 3.6 GPA, Honors

What will you major in/study? Science or Business (undecided)

Why did you choose the school? “After meeting with the coaches at the schools we visited last winter, I knew that UNC had the ‘sense of family’ I was looking for in a university as well as a top notch lacrosse program, I really bought into the whole experience. The campus and facilities are incredible and with a great coaching staff aboard I believe that UNC has the capability of winning a national championship. The warm weather definitely does not hurt, and knowing UNC academically is one of the most respected universities in the country is a huge plus.”

What is your HS team’s outlook for next season? “It was a ‘Year of Firsts’ for Avon Grove Lacrosse this season. After becoming Ches-Mont Co-Champions for the first time we were able to give Avon Grove its first District 1 title. We made a run late in the state playoffs and that was an awesome experience as a freshman. Things are looking up for next year’s season. We are returning most of our starting players except for a few seniors who had strong roles on our team this year. We will be working hard to exceed our goals and hopefully make another run at a state championship in 2014.”

Thank Yous:
“I want to thank (UNC) Coach (Joe) Breschi and Coach (Pat) Myers for recruiting me and giving me this opportunity. I want to thank my high school coach, Eric Jackson, for helping me through the process. Thanks to my youth coach, Adam Mueller, for teaching me the game and developing my fundamentals. Special thanks to Mesa coaches, Mark (Aitken), and Brad (Ament) for their support. And I especially want to thank Mesa head Coach Peter (Rohr), for his guidance and believing in me. If not for all my coaches I would not be in the position I’m in today. And lastly I’d like to thank my parents and my older brothers for their love and support.”

Other schools considered? Penn State, Penn, Michigan, Johns Hopkins, Virginia
